1. Explain the difference between normal variation and genetic mutation. The difference between normal variation and genetic mutation is that in genetic mutation there is a change that happens in the DNA whereas normal variation are just the differences between one person to the next. 2. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) now screens all Division I and II athletes for sickle cell trait. How do you feel about testing for sickle cell anemia at birth vs. testing for the trait as a young adult? I think that it is a good iidea to test for sickle cell anemia at birth because you can find treatment faster for your newborn faster and reduce the diseases affects. I also feel that athletes should get tested for this traittt because if something were to happen the paramedics would be able to find a solution faster. If nobody knows that the athlete is a carrier of this trait they probably wouldn’t be taking those extra precautions that should be taking before and after games/practiices. 3. Does the NCAA testing policy discriminate against athletes with the sickle cell trait? Does it discriminate based on race or ethnicity? The NCAA policy doesn’t discriminate against athletes with the sickle cell trait, or at least they shouldn’t. Having this trait doesn’t make you a better or worse athlete your performance will still be the same.
