All assignments in this course are checked in SafeAssign to ensure that they are written in your own words. Are you ready to complete this assignment? This assignment is intended to be completed after: You have completed the Learning Materials on Ecosystem Services (Module 10) You have read this week's Course Reading: Abramovitz, J. (1998). Putting a value on nature’s free services. World Watch Magazine 11(1): 10-19. Deliverables Answer the following questions. Be sure to include the full reference for the source of any information used to answer these questions, and include in-text citations where appropriate . It is expected that your answers will be based on information found in Abramovitz (1998) and the Learning Materials from SCIE 221 The Environment (2022). Resources For how to format in-text citations, see the Humber Library’s APA in Minutes for in-text citations: https://library.humber.ca/help/apa-7th/text-citations#main-content You may find it helpful to re-do the “You Quote It, You Note It” tutorial at: https://library.acadiau.ca/research/tutorials/you-quote-it-you-note-it-2.html For a refresher on how to properly format some online sources, see the Humber Library’s APA in Minutes for Websites: https://library.humber.ca/help/apa-7th/websites#main- content Question 1 Which category(ies) of ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating, cultural, or supporting) do bees provide? Briefly explain why you think bees provide that category of services. (2 marks) Bees provide the ecosystem service of pollination, which falls under the category of supporting services. Pollination is essential for the reproduction of many plant species, which in turn provide habitat, food, and other benefits for both humans and wildlife. They contribute to the maintenance of healthy ecosystems by pollinating plants, which helps to sustain the diversity and abundance of plant species. This, in turn, supports other organisms in the food chain and contributes to the overall resilience and stability of ecosystems. Reference:
Abramovitz, J. (1998, Jan). Putting a value on nature's "free" services . World Watch , 11 10-19. Question 2 Briefly describe two ways in which modern agricultural practices reduce the productivity of crops by reducing pollination in the reading Putting a value on nature's "free" services?. (i.e., What are two ways that modern/industrialized agriculture reduce pollination?) (2 marks) Two ways in which modern agricultural practices reduce the productivity of crops by reducing pollination are the overuse of pesticides and the loss of natural habitat for pollinators. Pesticides can kill bees and other pollinators, while the removal of natural habitats like forests and grasslands reduces the number of pollinators in an area. Reference: Abramovitz, J. (1998, Jan). Putting a value on nature's "free" services . World Watch , 11 10-19. Question 3 The Abramovitz article was written in 1998. If we have known this information about ecosystem services for over 30 years, why do you think we have not yet shifted our economic systems? (This is an opinion question, so you do not need in-text citations or references unless you include information that did not come from your own brain). (1 mark) Which category(ies) of ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating, cultural, or supporting) do bees provide based on the reading Putting a value on nature's "free" services? Briefly explain why you think bees provide that category of services.
