1 I Am (An Interdisciplinarian) Erik Foate BIS3000: Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies Ann Hamilton September 20, 2023
2 I Am (An Interdisciplinarian) What does it mean to be an interdisciplinarian, you ask? I feel several things make up an interdisciplinarian. When I first chose this degree honestly, I did not fully understand what it stood for. It took me a long time until I understood why I chose the option or what it meant to me. I do feel I made a solid choice for a degree option. I did feel that with a business degree, I was very limited in what I wanted to study. I liked the option of mixing up classes and picking topics that I was interested in and that would be good for my career. I feel this option will be a well-rounded education. What it means to be an Interdisciplinarian You must integrate multiple disciplines as an interdisciplinarian. You will use methods, knowledge, and perspectives from many academic disciplines. In doing this you will gain a comprehensive understanding of complex issues or questions. There is a holistic understanding of subjects, and you will recognize that solving problems often requires an answer from different disciplines because they cannot be answered from just one single method or approach. (Augsburg, 2016) An interdisciplinarian is willing to cross traditional boundaries of academic disciplines. They are willing to explore unfamiliar territory and collaborate with experts in different fields. Finally, an interdisciplinarian has a problem-centered focus. They prioritize the relevance of their work to address real-world challenges and strive to make a positive impact. Why I chose to be an Interdisciplinarian There are many reasons that someone chooses this field. I feel that the desire to make an impact is the highest reason. As an interdisciplinarian, you may have the desire to make an impact on society and see positive changes to real-world problems. (Augsburg, 2016) Your work usually offers creativity and innovation by encouraging ideas and methods from different fields.
3 As an interdisciplinarian, you are drawn to be involved with complex issues and feel that this field is personally fulfilling. You can explore a wide range of topics and have diverse viewpoints on issues. After thinking about these reasons for being an interdisciplinarian I see that this makes up the four drivers we learned about. The book states that the four drivers are why interdisciplinary studies have expanded in the 21 st century. Augsburg (20106) listed the four drivers as: 1. The inherent complexity of nature and society; 2. The desire to explore problems and questions that are not confined to a single discipline; 3. The need to solve societal problems; and 4. The power of new technologies (National Academy of Sciences, 2004, P.2) ( National Academy of Sciences, 2004, as cited in Augsburg, 2016, p. 22 ) Conclusion In summary, being an interdisciplinarian you are adopting a flexible collaborative approach to learning and research that will be different than a traditional disciplinary boundary. Individuals choose to become interdisciplinarians for a variety of reasons, including a desire to address complex issues, promote innovation, find personal fulfillment, and make a positive impact on society. I know that I have chosen the correct academic field to graduate from. I currently own a store in East Lansing and this field of study will help me in the future with my career goals.
