Edit your work carefully before submitting. 1. Which treatment tests Hypothesis #1? What is your reasoning? (2 marks) Treatment control orange tests hypothesis #1 since if the her1 mutant C-fern gametophytes do not respond to ACE, then when adding the WT filtrate to her1 gametophyte the result won’t be that male-only gametophytes are being produced, because if only male gametophytes are produced this would mean this hypothesis is wrong. 2. Which treatment tests Hypothesis #2? What is your reasoning? (2 marks) Treatment control purple tests hypothesis #2 since If the her1 mutant C-fern gametophytes do not secrete ACE, then when adding the her1 filtrate to WT gametophyte the result won’t be an increase in proportion above baseline of male-only gametophytes being produced, because if only male gametophytes are increasingly being produced when compared to baseline proportions then hypothesis #2 would be wrong. 3. The other four treatments are control treatments. Describe the factors that each of those four treatments can aid you to rule out in this experiment. (4 marks)
The other four treatments are control treatments, treatment control blue and red where water is added as the filter, since it doesn’t have any ACE present this will result in no reproductive change so they may or may not be a response to ACE from the her1 and WT gametophytes. However, for the treatment control green since the gametophyte is WT which responds to ACE, and the filter type is WT which has ACE the result will be the production of male-only gametophytes instead of hermaphrodites. Additionally, treatment control red where her1 is the gametophyte and the filtrate type there should not be any male production.
