Exercise Lab 3: Reading Scientific Articles Exercise 1 (Microscope basics) On your table is a compound microscope and a dissecting microscope. We will investigate these in more detail next week. For today your group needs to do two things. A. Focusing the compound microscope 1. Make sure your microscope is plugged in and turned on. 2. Using a micropipette, place 75 microliters of Tetraselmis algae on a slide. 3. Gently place a coverslip over the drop. 4. Place your slide on the microscope. 4. Make sure you will be looking through the 10x lens (this is 100 times magnification) 5. Using the coarse focus knob (the big knob) lower the stage on the microscope. Then raise it slowly until the algae comes into focus. Describe what you see. B. Focusing the dissecting microscope 1. Make sure your microscope is plugged in and turned on. 2. Using a disposable pipette, place a single copepod in a drop of liquid on a petri dish. 3. Work as a group to find the drop and the copepod, using the knob on the right side to adjust the focus. How well are you able to see your copepod? What features can you see? **While you are waiting for other groups to finish looking in their microscopes, it may be a good idea to refresh yourself on the article you were supposed to read this week!**
Exercise 2 (Paraphrasing) When you use information from papers and other work written or created by others, it is important to credit the authors appropriately.  Regardless of whether you quote the authors verbatim or paraphrase or summarize their work, you need to cite them.  A general rule you can use on whether to include quotation marks around the information you are citing is that if you are using more than 4 words in a row that are exactly the same as the authors, you must put those words in quotes.  While quotations can be acceptable in certain instances, it is typically better to summarize other’s work in your own words without quotations.  You can find more about this at this resource on summarizing other’s work .  The question below provides an example of how to consider best practices in writing.    Practice Question:   In my own paper, I would like to include an idea from the following sentence from Hoskinson et al. (2017): “In contrast, results of linear mixed modeling on deep-feature pairs showed that course sequence (dosage effect) significantly predicted gains toward expertise , with a marginal effect of sort type (framework proposition; Table 4) on gains. Students in their second biology course made significantly greater normalized gains on 13 of 24 deep pairs (Figure 5) than students in their first course, and the effects were large.”   Which of the following sentences would be the best way to include this idea in my paper?  Explain in your group why you selected the response you do below and why not others.  You will have a chance after discussing to discuss this question with your instructor.   A.Results of linear mixed modeling on deep-feature pairs showed that course sequence (dosage effect) significantly predicted gains toward expertise (Hoskinson et al., 2017).  B.Students that were further along in their biology course sequence made significantly greater normalized gains on 13 of 24 deep pairs (Hoskinson et al., 2017).  C.Students that were further along in their biology course sequence showed more expert-like thinking (Hoskinson et al., 2017).  D.“Results of linear mixed modeling on deep-feature pairs showed that course sequence (dosage effect) significantly predicted gains toward expertise” (Hoskinson et al., 2017).  Exercise 3 (Reading a Scientific Articles)
A. You will now be put into temporary groups according to your roles - all of the Principal Investigators will work together, all of the Protocol Experts together, etc. Based on your role, complete the following assignment: Principal Investigators (Introduction) : Create an outline of the introduction highlighting these areas: background information, what are the broader biology implications, what question(s) are the authors are trying to address, and what is their hypothesis? What are two strengths and one area of improvement in the introduction? Protocol Experts (Methods) : Create cartoons (pictorial representation) to explain the methods. You may need to include multiple drawings and you will need to include the specific details of the methods on the drawing. What are two strengths and one area of improvement in the methods? Data Experts (Results) : What are two or three major points from the results? Analyze and redraw at least one of the figures in your own way. You cannot simply copy the figures that are present, you must make a new one. For example, turn a graph into a table, change the format of a graph and/or combine multiple graphs into one. These can be hand drawn. What are two strengths and one area of improvement of the results? Analysis Experts (Discussion) : Summarize the author’s discussion and conclusions in outline style format. For example, bullet points might work well. What are two strengths and one area of improvement in the discussion/conclusion? B. Return to your research group . Each person will present what they did for their part of the article. Then, for each part of the article, as a group, discuss what was done well and what could be improved. Introduction : What are two things that were well done in this section? What is one way this section could be improved?
