University of Warwick School of Engineering ES2C1 Introduction to Biomedical and Clinical Engineering Individual Assignment FFA/Resit [AY 2022/2023] Submission Date: Tuesday, 29 August 2023, 12:00pm Learning Objectives This assignment is designed to give you experience in: • assessing recent advances in healthcare technologies or medical devices associated with biomechanics, synthetic biology for healthcare and medical imaging. • conducting literature review from the journal articles related to areas mentioned above. • understanding the ethics and safety considerations to areas mentioned above. Mini Report on Recent Advances in Healthcare Technologies In the first two weeks of this module, you had lectures on Introduction to Biomedical Engineering (Week 16) and Medical Devices (Week 17). These two lectures provide materials related to the required ethics and safety regulations for any healthcare technologies or medical devices considered. In Weeks 22-24, you have gone through lectures covering the topics listed below: • Biomechanics • Synthetic Biology for Healthcare • Medical Imaging

Dr. M. Foo Task: As an intern biomedical engineer for one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the UK, you are requested to do background research on the current state-of-the-art healthcare technologies or medical devices that is available on the market. The aim of this task is to help the company in deciding whether or to invest time and resources into the innovation of this technology to compete with global market. Choose ONE of the topics from Biomechanics, Synthetic Biology for Healthcare or Medical Imaging and read the accompanying journal article to give you general picture of the current state-of-the-art technology in those respective topics. Then, prepare a report to document the following: • Identify one of the recent advances in the healthcare technologies or medical devices from the provided journal article associated with your choice of topic above that you think has great potential for innovation. • Discuss the ethics considerations governing the technology that you have chosen following the materials given in Week 16 (i.e., Introduction to Biomedical Engineering). • Discuss about the safety associated with that technology that you have chosen following the materials given in Week 17 (i.e., Medical Devices). • Discuss the pros and cons associated with the technology you have chosen. • Suggest one (practical) innovation that you think that can improve this technology. After your research, you are to prepare a 6-page report documenting your findings to the top management in the upcoming company meeting for them to make their decision. Also, you are to record a 5-minute presentation to summarise your findings to the company top management in the upcoming company meeting. Submission of work Submit the following items in Tabula: • A 6-page report (strict page limit)* containing the following sections: a) Introduction: Give an introductory material on the topic and the identified healthcare technology of your choice. b) Comparative Review: Discuss the pros and cons associated with the technology that you have chosen. c) Ethics and Safety: Discuss the ethics and safety considerations governing the technology that you have chosen. d) Proposed Innovation: Discussion one practical innovation to improve the technology that you have chosen. e) Conclusion: Provide a concluding remark to your review. f) References: List down any additional references you have used throughout the review. • Record a 5-minute representation (strict time limit)* summarising your 6-page report. *Any report content beyond page 6 limit and video presentation beyond 5 minutes will not be marked.

Remember to cite the references/sources of those supporting results. ATTENTION: DO NOT COPY THE CONTENT DIRECTLY FROM THE JOURNAL ARTICLE. USE YOUR OWN WORDS. PLAGIARISM CARRIES SEVERE PENALTY. Assessment Your submitted work will be assessed as follows: • (20%). Expected: Justification behind the choice of the topic and the chosen healthcare technology. • (20%). Expected: The in-depth but succinct discussion about the pros and cons of the chosen technology. • (20%). Expected: Discussion on the ethics and safety considerations of the chosen technology. • (20%). Expected: Practical innovation to the chosen technology. • (10%). The cohesiveness and structure of the report. • (10%). The quality of the presentation summarising the report. NOTE: You can submit both your report and video as a single zip file to Tabula.
