Keeping Time With The Moon Questions: 1. How did the position of the Moon change over your observations made in a single night? - The Moon's position underwent several changes throughout the night. Through my observations, I observed a gradual southward shift in its position over time. Additionally, I noted that at 18:40, the Moon appears larger in contrast to its size at 20:00. In summary, based on my observations,It is apparent that the Moon showed a slight departure from its initial stationary position. 2. Explain why the Moon changed its position - Every 24 hours, the Earth completes one full rotation on its axis from west to east. When this happens, different parts of the sky become visible to observers on the Earth as the Earth spins. This rotation causes the change of day and night. Due to this, all celestial bodies, including the Moon, appear to travel across the sky from east to west. This is why the Moon changed its position during my observation. In comparison to how the Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon's orbit around the Earth is a bit different. Because of its tilt, the Moon's position in the night sky changes every night.
Keeping Time With The Moon 3. State the phase of the Moon you observed. Did the phase change at all? - Based on my observations it is evident that there were changes to the moon’s phase. As the sun descended towards the horizon, approximately around 18:40 the moon reassembled a full moon. However as the nighter got darker, around 20:00 the moon transitioned into a waning gibbous 4. Indicate with an X or arrow on the following diagram, where the Moon is located relative to the Earth and Sun for your observation.
