.
Explain why we see the Milky Way as a faint band of light stretching across the sky.
The light emitted from the milky way is reflected among all of the dust and gas
surrounding it, causing a faint light.
2
.
Explain where in a spiral galaxy you would expect to find globular clusters, molecular
clouds, and atomic hydrogen.
Atomic hydrogen and molecular clouds are found in areas where new stars are found to
begin forming which would be located in the disk of the galaxy. Globular clusters, on the
other hand, are located in spherical halos which consist of older stars.
3
.
Describe several characteristics that distinguish population I stars from population II
stars.
Population 1 stars are younger, hotter, and brighter. Population 2 stars are exactly the
opposite, older, colder, dimmer, and are found in globular clusters.
4
.
Briefly describe the main parts of our Galaxy.
Galactic nucleus/center, star disks, a large bulge, and a halo.
6
.
Explain why the abundances of heavy elements in stars correlate with their positions in the
Galaxy.
The mass presence of specific elements in certain areas determines which star and how many
can be formed. The brightness of those said stars is determined by their position in the galaxy.
1
.
Describe the main distinguishing features of spiral, elliptical, and irregular galaxies.
Irregular galaxies have no specified shapes and their gravitational force is also irregular.
Elliptical galaxies are spherical and contain older stars. Spiral galaxies contain many
different components that make them up like halos, disks, and bulges.
2
.
Why did it take so long for the existence of other galaxies to be established?
Our technology was not advanced enough to see far enough at the time, only up until
recently were we able to view such far distances.
4
.
If we now realize dwarf ellipticals are the most common type of galaxy, why did they
escape our notice for so long?
They’re very difficult to see considering how faint they are.
7
. Why is Hubble’s law considered one of the most important discoveries in the history
of astronomy?
It puts the existence of an expanding galaxy into perspective in the sense that a form of
measurement was developed.
13
. What is the most useful standard bulb method for determining distances to
galaxies?
