M1 L2 Assignment #2 - H-R Diagram Review
Name:
Nevaeh Knight
Date:
August 30, 2022
Purpose
: In this lesson, you are going to explore the patterns of luminosity (brightness) and temperature
among stars. Scientists use these patterns to understand characteristics of different stars.
Directions
: Complete each part below using the websites provided.
Part 1:
Answer these questions using the Studying Stars section of this website:
http://aspire.cosmic-ray.org/Labs/StarLife/studying.html
What does the H-R diagram show us?
An H-R diagram shows a star's absolute magnitude & temperature. The stars at the top are the brightest & the
stars at the bottom are very dim/ darkest. On an H-R diagram the temperature decreases as you move from
left to right. When arranging an H-R diagram you can start to see patterns forming between different stars.
What does the vertical axis represent?
What does this mean?
The vertical axis represents a star's absolute magnitude. This is the star's brightness. The bright stars are more
towards the top of the diagram meanwhile the dimmer are more towards the bottom.

M1 L2 Assignment #2 - H-R Diagram Review
What does the horizontal axis represent? .
What does this mean?
The horizontal axis represents a star's temperature. This is the stars temperature. Hotter stars produce more
blue light & cooler stars produce more red light.
Describe our Sun’s location on the H-R diagram according to luminosity and surface temperature.
Our Sun is a fairly average star and sits near the middle near the Main Sequence.
PART 2:
Use the information on the second H-R diagram at this link:
https://www.atnf.csiro.au/outreach//education/senior/cosmicengine/stars_hrdiagram.html
to identity one star
from each group in the data table, recording their characteristics.

* Luminosity is listed on the RIGHT of this H-R Diagram. Do not use absolute magnitude from the left side.
What does “main sequence” star mean according to the H-R diagram?
A main sequence star is the stage that seems to be where most stars spend a majority of their lifetime.
Describe the relationship between a star’s mass and luminosity.
The luminosity is set by the mass. The larger a stars mass is the larger its luminosity is.
