References Guinness, Os. “Our Civilisational Moment.” ARC Research, October 23, 2023. https://www.arc-research.org/research-papers/our-civilisational-moment. This is a research paper by Os Guinness titled Our Civilisational Moment , and is part of a greater conglomeration of various research papers within the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship database. Overall ARC is directed towards reimagining the future in a positive sense, rather than the overly pessimistic perspective that is offered in the mainstream media. Guinness’s paper in particular analyzes the decline of the Western world, and our particular “civilizational moment.” His proposed solution is one that is faith based, this solution is one that I plan to use as a supporting point to Peterson’s 12 rules, and a plan for a revitalization of America and our values. Mansfield, Harvey C. “Chapter 1.” Essay. In Manliness . Yale University Press, 2008. Mansfield’s work will again be used as a supporting piece to Peterson’s 12 rules. Although I do not find all of what Mansfield says to be necessary to my argument, I do find value in his description of traditional masculinity and its value. In today’s society, men have been essentially domesticated, and demonized for their more masculine traits, when in reality they are a virtue. Mansfield describes this in his book, and in this chapter I find a lot of value that aligns with Peterson’s overall message when it comes to finding value in life.
Nisbet, Robert. “Robert Nisbet - The Quest for Community (Chapter 3; The Problem of Community),” 1953. I plan to use Robert Nisbet’s The Quest for Community, chapter 3, as yet another supporting point to Peterson’s 12 rules. In this Nisbet speaks of the importance of family, and community within a functioning society. This is something that I would argue is lacking in modern society, and could greatly benefit younger generations as they attempt to align themselves with a deeper meaning, and something more important. Similarly, Nisbet’s argument will act as an opening into my final argument for creating meaning in the younger generations, as I bring in Harvey Mansfield’s critiques on modern feminism. Peterson, Jordan B. 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos ,. Westminster, London, England: Penguin Books, 2019. I plan to use Jordan B. Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, by analyzing each rule, or the more relevant ones and how they can be used to revitalize America. In particular, how they can be used to give the young generation a sense of purpose greater than hedonistic self aggrandizing pleasure that is all to present in today’s society. Although not directly conservative in nature, Peterson’s classical liberal temperament plays a hefty role in the rules proposed in this book. I think that some of these rules can create a non-partisan perspective on what constitutes a meaningful life, which will allow me to draw connections between the right and left in modern day America.
Peterson, Jordan B. Assorted Podcasts Although I have not chosen the specific podcast episodes I would like to use, Peterson has a lot of content that is not written, rather is expressed through lectures or conversations within his podcasts. In particular he tends to talk a lot about the importance of responsibility, relationships, and marriage as an antidote to a lot of issues America, and the West in general are facing. As I stated the overall goal of this paper will be to use Peterson and his 12 rules to create a plan to revitalize the American youth. I believe that responsibility is an integral part of having value in life, and I think that creating a family is the most valuable thing people can do. Peterson talks about this in depth throughout many of his podcast episodes, and would make excellent supporting points to his 12 rules.
