THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE 2 Module 3 Discussion Forum What is Gnoseology or Theory of Knowledge? Gnoseology or Theory of Knowledge, also called epistemology, in my opinion is a science that studies and reflects on the human learning process. Is because of our human nature that throughout history, people tried to search for answers and methods to solve different issues, in order to adapt and evolve thru the centuries. Furthermore, this human process of trying to understand what surrounds us set foot to the ideas and postulates of our great Greek philosophers and the birth of Philosophy. This process of knowledge had been influenced by the different postulates and theories exposed by the philosophers we studied in previous modules, such as the postulates of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and St. Augustine. The society and educational system we have today was shaped by the learnings we obtained when these philosophers tried to find answers to the various theories they presented in their written pieces. When searching for the meaning of the word “gnoseology”, I learned that this word comes from the ancient Greek words “gnosis”, meaning knowledge and “logos” meaning words or discourse. According to Immanuel Kant’s gnoseology, “intuition takes a prominent position and was introduced as appearing on two levels: that of sensation and intellectualization” (Strawson, 2016). In my understanding Kant’s Theory of Knowledge states that the person needs to see or experience the things in order for the process of knowledge to start. The Theory of Knowledge concluded that the mind uses two faculties during the process of acquiring knowledge which are
sensibility and understanding. By studying these terminologies, it was very interesting to me understanding how our minds operate during the process of creating knowledge . THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE 3 Why is it important for an educational specialist to know this theory? Since this theory studies the ways we use reasoning and the senses to acquire knowledge, in my opinion it is extremely important for all educators to understand it. As a special education teacher and also school counselor, when I design my lesson plans I include activities where my students have opportunities to feel and experience the concepts they are learning. As educators, we all took human development courses and learned in college how the human being experiences stages during the learning process. Now as educational specialist, having a deeper understanding of these theories will allow us to better design or select curriculum materials for our schools. If we apply gnoseology or the theory of knowledge in our schools, we will guarantee that our students have the best conditions for the learning process to take place. Likewise, gnoseology studies the way the student and his/her mind generates concepts to solve a given situation. In my personal experience as a special education teacher, I am sure I used this theory when trying to understand the learning process of my students, their strengths and weaknesses in learning the content. As Briceno (2016) mentioned in her article, one of the characteristics of gnoseology is that “it tries to find the possible limitations that hinder knowledge”. Even know working as a school counselor, I use this theory when designing functional behavioral plans or participating in the IEP process and trying to identify the “antecedents” that are limiting my student’s ability to process or gain the knowledge they are supposed to as compared to their peers.
