Bacon re-organized the scientific method and believed that we need to study the human being and his environment by making controlled observations and also applying the data provided by the senses. 2) John Locke was an educator very attached to the philosophy of knowledge. Locke’s point of view stated the simple idea of the senses, which for Locke originate from the experiences. He believed that a child’s knowledge and education are shaped only from experiences through life. He also exposed the concept of education as a holistic approach where the physical, moral, and intellectual components are of equally value to acquire virtue. 3) John Amos Comenius contributions were centered in the active process of learning and the access of knowledge. Comenius was the first philosopher to systematize the didactic principles such as: living teaching, graduation, imitation, and exercise. He fought for the idea of educational inclusion and literacy at all levels and that all children are capable of learning. Further, Comenius promoted the experiential learning, or using the senses to produce knowledge and he reiterated the importance of the role of the teacher in the learning process. 4) Jacques Rousseau was an intellectual who considered education as the ideal path to shape citizens able to freely participate in the challenges of a modern society. He proposed the “head, heart, hand” approach, meaning that education needs to instruct the child as a whole (intellectually, religion/emotionally, and physically). 6) Johann Herbart was the first philosopher to recognize pedagogy as a science, thus been known as the father of scientific pedagogy based on psychology. He also proposed the first system of educational theory. He specified four important steps or levels to achieve education: Stage of clarity or demonstration of the object, Stage of association of comparison, Stage of Systematization, and finally the Stage of Application. 7) John Dewey postulates reflect his ideas on an experimental method school, where children learn the necessary competencies that will enable them to solve real-life problems. Dewey explained the idea of educating the whole child while covering his/her intellectual, emotional and physical needs. 8) For Immanuel Kant, only thru education a man will transform to a man. He sees education as a complex process which involves discipline, instruction, and formation, and where the most important goal is to achieve reasoning and morality.

GREAT POST-RENAISSANCE EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHERS 4 9) For Friedrich Hegel there is no society without education, since society is the expression of reasoning. He introduced the concept of dialectic philosophy, and focused on the human being identity. Also, for Hegel it is behind education that resides the perfection of human nature. 10) Herbert Marcuse proposed the idea of the unidimensional man. This unidimensional man is able to change with the system, but mostly to the changes of his needs within the system.
