Draft a focused list containing at least ten (10) things to remember about the Post-
Renaissance Educational Philosophers. Define the ten (10) selected concepts in your own
words.
1)
Fracis Bacon developed an empiric scientific theory and for this accomplishment he is
considered a pioneer in the modern scientific thought. Bacon re-organized the scientific
method and believed that we need to study the human being and his environment by making
controlled observations and also applying the data provided by the senses.
2)
John Locke was an educator very attached to the philosophy of knowledge. Locke’s point of
view stated the simple idea of the senses, which for Locke originate from the experiences.
He believed that a child’s knowledge and education are shaped only
from experiences
through
life. He also exposed
the concept of education as a holistic approach where the
physical, moral, and intellectual components are of equally value to acquire virtue.

John Amos Comenius contributions were centered in the active process of learning and the
access of knowledge. Comenius was the first philosopher to systematize the didactic
principles such as: living teaching, graduation, imitation, and exercise. He fought for the
idea of
educational inclusion and literacy at all levels and
that all children are capable of
learning. Further, Comenius promoted the experiential learning, or using the senses to
produce knowledge and he reiterated the importance of the role of the teacher in the learning
process.

Jacques Rousseau was an intellectual who considered education as the ideal path to shape
citizens able to freely participate in the challenges of a modern society. By many he is
considered the father of Pedagogy. He also presented the principle of active learning, were

the student learns from his/her natural instincts and interest and the education is not imposed
by the teacher.

Johann Pestalozzi worked himself as a teacher in an orphanage and with his practice he
reformed the traditional pedagogy of his era. He proposed the “head, heart, hand” approach,
meaning that education needs to instruct the child as a whole (intellectually,
religion/emotionally, and physically).

Johann Herbart was the first philosopher to recognize pedagogy as a science, thus been
known as the father of scientific pedagogy based on psychology.
He also proposed the first
system of educational theory. He specified four important steps or levels to achieve
education: Stage of clarity or demonstration of the object, Stage of association of
comparison, Stage of Systematization, and finally the Stage of Application.

John Dewey postulates reflect his ideas on an experimental method school, where children
learn the necessary competencies that will enable them to solve real-life problems. Dewey
explained the idea of educating the whole child while covering his/her intellectual,
emotional and physical needs.
8)
For Immanuel Kant, only thru education a man will transform to a man. He sees education
as a complex process
which involves discipline, instruction, and formation, and where the
most important goal is to achieve reasoning and morality.

For Friedrich Hegel there is no society without education, since society is the expression of
reasoning. He introduced the concept of dialectic philosophy, and focused on the human
being identity. Also, for Hegel it is behind education that resides the perfection of human
nature.
10)
Herbert Marcuse proposed the idea of the unidimensional man. This unidimensional man is
able to change with the system, but mostly to the changes of his needs within the system. He
defended the interdisciplinary approach as the best method to understand society.
