1. You are asked to find an image of "Little Red Riding Hood" that somehow reflects the spirit
of
your
favorite version of the story you read for this Module
(whether The Story of
Grandmother, "Little Red Cap," "Little Red Riding Hood,"
any
of the versions we read or
watched in the Module). You can look wherever you wish: unfortunately a great on-campus
resource
World of Words
is closed due to COVID-19; so far the public libraries are open, but I
predict they will close; you can look through a Google Image search, a Google Arts and Culture
search [not so great, the results are mainly stuffed animals!], or a search in the excellent ArtStor
database through the UA Library (which only shows around 80 results for a search of "Red
Riding Hood," but still, that's 80 results), or on
Surlalune
. What you are looking for is an image
from art or culture that has the feeling of your favorite version of "Little Red Riding Hood" that
you read for this module. Prepare the image to upload to the Discussion (high resolution is best).
G-Rated please. Be sure to credit the image with any pertinent copyright information: artist
name, title, year, location.
2. Choose a quotation of 25-50 words from the favorite version of "Little Red Riding Hood" the
image reminds you of, and after you upload your image, next type the quotation under the image
in your post, as a caption for the image. Indicate the source of the quotation at its end -- that is,
which story it is from that is in this module.
3. Write a couple of sentences about why that story was your favorite "Little Red Riding Hood"
-- was it because of its themes, style, personal meaning, etc?
4. Reply to at least two peers' images and favorite versions. Always reply first on any post that
has no reply yet, before commenting on a post that already has a comment. When you reply,
please comment on the fit between image and excerpt; whether the image would "not work" with
another version (i.e.
why
pairing is wonderful); the difference between your favorite and your
peers' favorite or the similarities between these; etc.
5. Be sure to read the replies you received to your own post.
1) Little Red Riding Hood - Digital Remastered - By Carl Offterdinger

2) “Little Red Cap opened her eyes and when she saw the sunbeams dancing to and fro through
the trees and how the ground was covered with beautiful flowers, she thought, "If a take a fresh
bouquet to grandmother, she will be very pleased. Anyway, it is still early, and I'll be home on
time." And she ran off the path into the woods looking for flowers.” -Little Red Cap by Jacob
and Wilhelm Grimm
3) So, the Brothers Grimm version of little red riding hood, titled “Little Red Cap”, is my
favorite version of the story of little red riding hood because I have always been partial to the
Brothers Grimm versions of fairy tales and because it seemed to be the least graphic of the
versions in this module. One tale had cannibalism, one had (what seemed) sexual inferences, and
another was purely confusing (They Met in a Dream). Another thing I liked about this version is
that it includes a happy ending and a life lesson (listen to mother). I’m also a bit of a vindictive
person, so I appreciate little red filling the wolf with stones once saved by the huntsman.
4) I had the same version of little red as my favorite, but I shared a photo of her collecting the
flowers the wolf suggested she pick. I do feel as if this quote isn’t a perfect pairing for the photo
because it is from a different part of the story. This image does fit with this version of little red
but maybe a quote like, “She found, to her surprise, that the door was open. She walked into the
parlor, and everything looked so strange that she thought, "Oh, my God, why am I so afraid? I
usually like it at grandmother's." for a better fit with the darkness of the image and how little red
cap seems to stay at the end of the bed wary.
I had the same favorite version and even used the same quote. I love the whimsy this photo
shows that truly makes you think of fairy tales. This picture wouldn't fit with the version
translated by Maria Tatar since it doesn't include little red stopping to pick flowers. I like how
you read the Grimm version with your grandma as a child since I wasn't allowed to read the
Grimm fairy tales until I was in 5th grade.
