Assignment : (10% of final grade) One of the most important goals/benefits of participating in a Term Abroad to a foreign destination is the change experienced regarding one’s preconceptions, and the broadening of one’s cultural understanding. Sometimes what we expect of the world, beyond the little piece we reside and operate within, is something very different from what we encounter when we experience other places and people. Sometimes our preconceptions, expectations, and prejudices are entirely overthrown, hopefully for the better. In this assignment you will be writing a reflection paper in 2 parts. Part 1 : Share the beliefs about the people, places, and cultures associated with your Term Abroad destination that you held prior to your travels. What prejudices and prior expectations did you hold? Where do you think you got those beliefs or expectations from? (This part of the reflection can be written prior to departure if your travel dates fall after the start of the semester. If you travel early, try to give an honest account of your views before traveling.) When given the opportunity to learn about cities within Italy or all throughout the world, I chose Italy. This is because I have had prior experiences traveling throughout the world to some of the locations in the world tour whereas I have no prior knowledge of cities within Italy. I was under the impression that if I chose the tour throughout Italy I would be able to learn about the culture and beliefs unbiased. I would be able to study the cities without prior knowledge and expectations, which in my opinion will give me a better understanding of the cities and their culture. So as of right now I hold no prejudices or expectations involving the cities of Italy. I will be studying the following cities within the next 8 weeks in this class completely unbiased. Going
into this class, knowing I have no prior knowledge excites me because every other place I have ever traveled and learned about I have been under the impression of someone else's experience and what they thought from their engagements while there. Part 2 : Reflecting on your experiences abroad, how were your prejudices and expectations validated, altered, or overturned? How did your initial beliefs line up with the real situation you encountered? Were you surprised? How has this experience changed your worldview and core beliefs? Please give specific examples and an honest self-evaluation. When given the opportunity to learn about cities within Italy or all throughout the world, I chose Italy. This is because I have had prior experiences traveling throughout the world to some of the locations in the world tour whereas I have no prior knowledge of cities within Italy. Going into this experience with no prior knowledge allowed me to learn about the culture of Italy and specific cities within the country. After going through this experience my opinion has been altered due to the knowledge I have gained teaching me about the deeper meaning behind the art and architecture within cities like Rome or Florence. Having no prior belief or impressions of the knowledge I obtained gave me the opportunity to learn more about the culture without the bias many often have from their personal experiences or culture. So by having this opportunity I was able to fully immerse myself in the history of the art, religion, and other cultural aspects. I was shocked by how deeply integrated in history the art and architecture aspects of Italian culture are. This discovery truly set in when I shockingly found out that the Leaning Tower of Pisa was built in a swamp to have the swamp be its protector. This is shocking because I would never think that a culture would build a piece of architecture knowing that later in life it would soon lean or fall over. But now, after learning about the culture and the history behind this action I now completely understand why it was done; but this brings me back to not having an impression prior to this experience, I think if I would have had knowledge of this without the full story I would have been biased to the situation. This has significantly changed my viewpoint on the world due to the fact that Italy is so different from America. I have found knowledge that showcases how deeply rooted Italy is in their Art, Architecture, Religion, Food, and the immensely interesting history they have. I have found that by learning about their culture I have been able to educate myself on how America's upbringing is different from Italy as well as the differences in our values as a country. After learning about the deep and intriguing history of Italy it has truly sealed the deal as the country I spend my internship abroad in, in the future.
