DISCUSSION 2 – Anti-Bias A key role of an Early Childhood Educator is aligning our practice with Anti-Bias Education beliefs. For this discussion you will: 1. Read the article ‘Anti-Bias Education’ Read the following online article from the NAEYC: CLICK HERE FOR ARTICLE 2. Answer any 3 of the reflective questions at the end of the article: 1. Where do I best fit anti-bias goals and issues into my curriculum plans for the day and the week? o It should be planned and consistent to include anti-bias goals in the program. It's important to work these goals into different parts of your day and week. During circle time, for instance, you could read books that celebrate differences and talk about how important it is to value everyone. Encourage children to make art that shows who they are and what their friends are like when they are doing art activities. Talking about how people from different cultures relate to the environment is another way to include different points of view in science and nature study. 2. How can I be sure no one is invisible or unnoticed? o It's important to make sure that no child feels invisible or ignored by making a space that welcomes all children and celebrates their individual qualities. Use displays and tools in the classroom that show people from different backgrounds and skill levels. Tell children stories and let them share their experiences. Allow all of the children to have a chance to speak in group conversations. Watch how children connect with each other and step in if you see a child being left out or forgotten. Having good relationships with families can also help you understand children's identities and backgrounds, which can help you meet their needs more effectively. 3. How can I use this topic to support and strengthen children’s innate sense of justice and their capacity to change unfair situations to fair ones? o You can help children develop their natural sense of justice by giving them chances to learn about and talk about what is fair and what is unfair. Encourage people to talk about these things openly. To help a child understand what happened and why, start a conversation when they feel like they were treated badly. To show what fairness and understanding mean, use stories, role-playing, and real-life examples. Teach people how to solve problems, such as how to handle conflicts and speak up for themselves and others. Show children how to be fair and respectful by how you treat them and how you treat each other. Post your response to the 3 reflective questions and respond in detail to 1 peer to gain full marks (5%) for this assignment.
