Compare and contrast the five ages of man in Hesiod’s Works and Days with the Ages of Man depicted in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. 2. Is the Iliad pro or anti war? Give reasons for your answer, using specific examples from the work. 3. Compare the depiction of Achilles in the Iliad with the depiction in at least two scenes in Troy. 4. Give at least 3 examples from the epic about how the Iliad is a commentary on leadership. 5. Discuss the concept of xenia (hospitality) as depicted in the Iliad. 6. Compare the depiction of Zeus in the Theogony with his depiction in Ovid’s Metamorphoses , Book One. 7. Discuss the nature of the succession myths in Theogony (Uranus-Kronos and Kronos- Zeus), the role Gaia/Earth plays in the myths and the underlying themes in both. 8. Discuss the important themes in both versions of the Pandora myth ( Theogony and Works and Days ). 9. Discuss the role of the gods in the Iliad and contrast this with the notable absence of the gods from the movie Troy – how does this absence affect the narrative in the movie?
10. Pick two characters from the Iliad and discuss the concepts of kleos (glory) and time (honor). Refer to specific events in our excerpts in your essay.
