Extra Credit - Question 3
Clause Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen are two artists who collaborated on many
large-scale pieces together. “Typewriter Eraser, Scale X”' is a well known piece that they did
together. A typewriter eraser is an ordinary tool used to erase typewriter marks from paper before
technology. Having this object on a larger scale reminds people of life before technology and the
tools with it. It is a playful way of reminding people how the world has advanced in many ways
through technology.
Given the chance to work with these talented artists, I want to install a piece of artwork
on our campus, De Anza Community College. The installation is two oversized hands shaking
hands. I think this is a great addition to our campus because shaking hands represent agreement
and trust. It also represents how humans connect and collaborate with one another. As a
communications major, I study how humans connect and interact with one another. It is
important to put an emphasis on connecting and trusting our community. This piece will make
people feel more comfortable with communicating with their peers as it would be an everyday
reminder to engage with each other.
Having this monument enlarged helps magnify the deeper meaning of a handshake. I
think it would serve as a wake up call to students who have not been serving their community.
When students pass this installation, they would be reminded of how important human
connections, partnerships, and agreements are. This installation will benefit our community and
encourage students to collaborate with each other. I think it will have a significant impact for the
De Anza community and that's why it’s special.
There’s many locations this installation can be placed at, such as the communications
area, the front of the school, or the center of the school. I believe the best place to host this
installation is the center of the school. This way, many students of all majors will pass it and be
reminded of the importance of connection. I want it to serve a purpose and inspire students'
positively. In my experience at De Anza, students do not connect with one another besides during
class. This is reasonable considering many of us will transfer to a variety of different schools but
that does not mean we can not bond with one another. I hope this installation will encourage
students to create a real relationship outside of school with one another and continue to keep
those relationships after they transfer or graduate.
It is important that this installation is created on a large scale. Scale is important because
having something so common put on a larger scale, really brings attention to it. If it were smaller,
It would be ignored or not as impactful because it is so simple. Hand shaking is not something
people would typically think about, it is something people do everyday. Having it on a larger
scale helps put an emphasis on why something so normal is so important. It helps people think
on a deeper level and ask themselves what hand shaking represents and why it is important.
Having people ask themselves these questions is impactful in spreading the message about
community and connecting with one another.
Clause Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen have always been playful but impactful with
making people think on a deeper level. Like when they did “Typewriter Eraser, Scale X”. By
creating a piece about shaking hands, they will put an emphasis on trust, connection, and
agreement at De Anza Community College.
