2 Gender Identity, Sexuality or Other Issue in Adolescence Assignment Locate and select a book, movie, television series, or streaming series that portrays an adolescent character who struggles with gender identity or issues related to their sexuality, or another issue of your choice that is covered in the textbook (ex: depression, suicidal ideation, eating disorder, autism, learning disability). You may type directly into this worksheet. Chosen media (television show, movie, book) and character: Euphoria- Nate Jacobs Character description (100-200 words) Nate Jacobs is an 18-year-old Caucasian male that lives in California. His father’s name is Cal Jacobs, his mother’s name is Marsha Jacobs and a brother that has no name in the show. Nate Jacob’s shows sociopathic tendencies with the need to always be the one who is in control. When Nate was eleven years old he found sextual videos of his dad with younger men. Through Nate’s childhood he would go into his dad’s office and continue to watch these videos of his father which was one of the big factors contributing to his sociopathic tendencies. This character is also betrayed as the school stereotypical jock who is mean and rude to everyone. Nate is very particular about how his body looks and his position as quarterback on the football team. Nate is also very specific in his taste for women due to the fact that he is trying to not be like his father when it comes to romantic relationships. After watching the show or reading the book please answer the following questions. Word count for each response must be between 150 – 250 words. You must include at least 2 scholarly sources to support your responses.
3 1. What issue is the character struggling with? Describe the character's adolescent stage of development. If you are unsure, based on what you know about their background, did they struggle in adolescence? Some issues that Nate struggles with is his body image, his need to always be in control, he is very insecure, and extreme anger issues with sociopathic tendencies. All of these issues stem from his childhood and the trauma he had to witness in his adolescent years (Schorr et al., 2020). Nate always wanted his body to be big in muscles and physically fit due to wanting to be able to be the “big man” around, which plays into his need to always be in control. Through childhood his father was very harsh with the way he would speak with Nate. His father would also choose what Nate would be doing with his life even if Nate did not want to do it himself. His mother was also very neglectful in his life making him insecure from all of the issues his father put him through. Nate’s anger issues and sociopathic tendencies came from watching what his father was doing with underaged boys. 2. What are some physical, cognitive, and social challenges and changes this character might have experienced during adolescence? Nate liked to feel like he was in control at all times. Even though Nate did not have an eating disorder, most adolescents that come from neglectful families or controlling family will end up having an eating disorder (Littleton and Ollendick, 2003). Nate had an obsession on what his body looked like and this stems from the security to always being able to control his weight. Cognitive challenges that Nate had during adolescence was trauma from seeing his dad’s videos and then his neglectful childhood and how he spent most of his time by himself. Nate’s father was very overbearing, while his mother was uninvolved in his childhood life and from this it showed Nate the toxic lifestyle he grew up to be a part of. Nate did not have that many social challenges he was

4 a rich white male who got anything he wanted from his mother because she did not want to deal with him. 3. What support if any does the character have? What impact might the lack of support have? Nate has support from his girlfriend throughout the show. His girlfriend’s name is Maddy, and she meets all of the criteria Nate has for a girlfriend. This relationship would be the most toxic relationship in Nates life but also the most supportive relationship in his life. Throughout the show the audience can see how these characters are very toxic together but at the end of the day they support each other in most things they do. The impact from the lack of support he has most likely is the root of his insecurity problems. In the end Maddy and Nate broke up due to how toxic their relationship was and from their breakup they both found more empathy for others. 4. How is the character impacted by factors using the processes of development (e.g., social norms)? What social stigmas exist for this character, and how do they handle these stigmas? Include a discussion on the relationship and influence of religion on the characters development. Social norms within Nate’s life was very restrictive. Nate came from a small town in California where everyone knew his family and respected them. The social norms Nate had to be boxed into was being a great son, having perfect respect, being very smart, and being the “it” boy at school. Through this he got put into specific stigmas, for example school jock, toxic masculinity, popularity, and more. These stigmas and social norms that Nate was forced into caused him to be manipulative, have aggressive behavior, and control issues. Throughout the show there was no talk about Nate or his families’ religious views. Nate did struggle with his sexuality throughout the show which from that could cause a tension if he was religious.
5 5. How can the Christian Worldview influence gender, sexual identity, or the other adolescent issue you have selected? Based on various Worldviews, how can different perceptions cultivate stigmas? The Christian Worldview has a very big impact on gender and sexual identity. The Christian Worldview has very specific views on gender roles and sexual identity and how other individuals should a line with these roles. The Christian Worldview looks at relationships in one way, that a man and women will get married and save sex until they are married. Through adolescents Nate Jacobs saw adultery, his father with young males, and the roles that his parents played, for example, his father was always in charge of his mother. From these roles that his parents played he learned from a young age that the man in the relationship will always put control over the women in the relationship. From other worldviews people can have stigmas about the Christian Worldview and how it is sinful for have sex before marriage or the sin of same sex relationships. Individuals with a secular worldview can view Christianity with a negative stigma in regard to this show and the characters within.
