Question 1:
The time I spent working as a corrections officer presented me with an ethical dilemma.
Many other inmates, some of whom had a history of violence, were sent to the same unit as me.
Inmates have said that one, whom we shall name simply by his initials, J
.t
, has a history of
verbally and physically mistreating them. He was a known troublemaker who had spent time
behind bars on many occasions. He had a reputation for causing problems. I was in charge of
monitoring James and another inmate called Joe, who also had a history of drug abuse, on the
same day. C
.
s was a quiet inmate who had never caused any issues throughout his incarceration.
J
.t
and C
.
s got into an intense argument, and then James grew very aggressive and
threatened Joe. James and C
.s
were at it for quite some time. I had to intervene to separate the
two inmates who were fighting. Having to decide how to react put me in a tough position. I
could have reported the incident and asked that
J.t
be removed from the unit, but I decided
against it out of concern that doing so might inflame the situation and lead to other acts of
violence. On the other side, I could have resolved the issue by talking it over with J
.t
and C
.s
before involving anybody else on staff.
Instead of consulting with the rest of the team, I went ahead and had the conversation
with J
.t A
nd e.
t.
Each inmate and I had our chats, and I asked them questions individually to try
to get to the core of the situation. J
.t
informed me that he was very upset because C
.
s had treated
him as if he did not belong there. Later, I spoke with C
.
s and probed him for insight into his
motivations. C
.
s said he had no ill will against J
.t
and had been trying to defend himself. I was
able to find the underlying cause of the situation and come up with a workable solution after
speaking with both inmates on my own.

I weighed all the potential consequences while making my decision. Because of this, I
knew that disclosing the incident might incite more violence and endanger other inmates' lives.
However, I felt compelled to file a report. My decision-making process also included potential
benefits to society as a whole. The inmates and the unit would benefit if I solved the issue
without involving other staff members.
The knowledge and experience I earned as a social worker would serve me well in a
future moral or ethical dilemma. Before making a decision, I would weigh my options' potential
drawbacks and benefits. I also think about the values that guide social workers, such as service,
social justice, and respect for the person, empathy, compassion, honesty, and professionalism. In
addition, I would think about what is best for the individuals involved and how my decision
would affect the neighborhood. This has taught me the importance of weighing all the factors at
play and considering the needs of all people involved before committing to a course of action.
Question 2:
As a
residential counselor
, I have been exposed to various challenging and sometimes
hazardous circumstances. When I was working with a client who had a history of drug misuse
and was in the process of recovery, I faced one of the circumstances that were both the most
challenging and the most hazardous I have ever been in. The patient had a record of violent
outbursts and was well-known for his or her lack of predictability. As part of my job
responsibilities, I was tasked to provide client-counseling services and assist them on their road
to recovery.
When I initially met the client, I was aware of their past and the possible threat they represented
to others. In addition to this knowledge, I was aware that it was necessary to develop

a trustworthy connection with the client to deliver good counseling services. Being patient and
empathetic allowed me to build trust with the customer, which led to a successful business
transaction. In addition, I was able to provide the client with the essential materials and
assistance they needed to assist them throughout their rehabilitation.
However, despite my best efforts, the customer continued to have episodes of aggressive
behavior. During one of these outbursts, the customer got physically hostile and threatened to
hurt me. He also yelled obscenities at me. By drawing on my expertise in crisis intervention, I
maintained my composure and resolved the conflict peacefully. In addition, I could contact for
assistance and have the matter handled by the authorities authorized to do so.
As I reflect on what transpired, I have concluded that I could have taken further
precautions to guarantee my and the client's safety. In the future, I will make sure to have a
strategy ready to deal with any potentially volatile events or hazardous circumstances that may
arise. In addition, I would make sure that there is a backup plan in place in case the scenario
worsens. In addition, I would make it a point to have a clear awareness of the client's background
and any possible triggers that might lead to an outburst on their part.
As a student, I feel more exposed to circumstances in which I am unfamiliar with the
client's past or the possible triggers that they may have. In these predicaments, it is reasonable
for me to anticipate that the School of Social Work will provide me with the assistance and
resources I need to keep myself safe. This can entail giving me further training in ways to handle
crises and calm down tense situations. The institution could provide my access to services, such
as mental health specialists and other professionals, who offer me further support and direction,
to me where I am enrolled.

I have learned from this experience how important it is to have the plan to deal with any
potentially hazardous or challenging circumstances. It has also shown me how important it is to
have a strategy in place to deal with any possible outbursts or risky circumstances. In addition,
because of this experience, I have realized how important it is to be completely aware of the
client's background and any possible triggers that may result in an outburst.
