Disney Pop Culture Roache 1 Module 1.2 Lens Exploration – Disney Mickey Ears Michelle Roache Southern New Hampshire University, SNHU IDS404 – Popular Culture Professor: Roberta Brannon September 3, 2023 Mickey ears have become a staple of Disney fans and park visitors since first introduced in 1955 as a part of the Mickey Mouse Club television show. As a Disney Cast Member, I see a sea of ears every time I am working. Visitors come to the park and the first stop is quite often a store or kiosk with a rack full of Mickey ears to choose from. When viewing this topic through the history lens (History is the study of the past and its connection to the present. It encompasses content, memories, and events situated in time.) we see this popular culture trend in the past as Mickey Mouse ears hats worn by children visiting Disneyland starting in the 50’s. These cherished hats, with our first names proudly stitched on them in a thick yellow thread, are a nostalgic memory for many of us. Over the years, these ears have evolved to headbands with many themes to appeal to nearly guest. Now the trend has been for adults to be the primary Mickey ear wearers. When viewing this topic through the humanities lens (Humanities is the study of cultures’ creative expression and contemplates metaphor, experience, and meaning.) we see the evolution of the themed Mickey ears. This includes nearly every popular Disney character, movie, franchise, and more. There are ears for newlyweds, new graduates, special events, holidays, and more.
Disney Pop Culture Roache 2 When viewing this topic through the natural and applied sciences lens (Natural and applied sciences study the material world grounded in the scientific method.) the evolution of Mickey ears have come a long way since 1955. Now there are ears with electronic components which allow them to light up and even some that are interactive with the nighttime shows in the Disneyland parks. When viewing this topic through the social sciences lens (Social sciences study human relationships and social structures grounded in demographic and statistic measurements.) we see the evolution of Mickey ears that appeal to all genders and ages, as well as for target audiences such as LGBTQ+, newlyweds, and differing religious preferences.
