HUM 102 Project Template by Landon Meadows To complete this template, replace the bracketed text with your responses. Part One: Choose the Creative Works 1. My Chosen topic: Mental Health 2. Creative work one: Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” a visual art. 3. Creative work two: The film “Garden State” also a visual art. 4. The creative works are both notable examples of mental health. In “Starry Night” for example, Gogh was in a mental asylum fighting severe depression when he created this beautiful painting. When one looks at the film “Garden State,” one can visualize for example the pain that (Zack Braff) felt and the mental health issues he faced going home to his mother’s funeral. These two creative work examples show us that all the humanities (Literary, Visual, performing), can use examples in a particular work to approach the topic of mental health. When it comes to diverse perspectives some examples we may see are: “Starry Night” for instance is a painting full of symbolism. Through analysis of Gogh's painting, historians noted that his painting’s colors have a certain meaning. The “Garden State” film Could have been seen as a film of pain, but a life lived through the pain. Graff, a character in the movie, coming home to attend his mother’s funeral was a hardship and pain he had to go through but eventually overcame. When it comes to diverse perspectives in both creative works, I would point out that even though Gogh and Graff are different people from two diverse backgrounds, they both are going through some form of mental distress. Gogh, a Dutch postimpressionist painter was born in the Netherlands on March 30, 1853. Zack Graff, an American actor was born in New Jersey on April 6, 1975. Both authors of these creative works are from diverse backgrounds and diverse cultures. Artists went through different paths in life. I believe even though they are from diverse backgrounds and cultures, I believe on Diverse perspectives that one artist can learn from the other on ways to handle their mental health issues. In the eyes of others many of the world's population are dealing with or have dealt with mental health issues, as statistics show. People could visualize both artist pain and growth as they went through their situations and gain knowledge of how they can deal with their mental health issues now or in the future. Assumptions of these two works could be among many. I think that a big one to point out would be that many people see others with mental health issues, and they say that “Oh that’s their personal problem” or “They should have had a better way out” and they go about their business. I believe that it would be biased to the fact that although others can create their own problems, certain mental health disorders cause problems that can consume the human mind, body, and soul. Gogh was a prime example of this issue. Another potential biases I see is the lack of potential programs out there to aid others with mental health problems. Once again, I look at Gogh when I think about this potential biases. Even though he was in an insane asylum, he found his own type of program to deal with his mental health problems and depression, art, and painting. Part Two: Self and Society 1. In the creative works, both works have their ways of helping the audience make sense of the topic of mental health. In Gogh’s “Starry Night”, even though there is not much of a description besides historical analysis, people can use his painting and perceive it in a way that links to the topic of mental health. It is said that historians use evidence and records to research and produce conclusions of a particular work. Being that Gogh was in a mental hospital when he completed this painting, shows us that a conclusion of this painting what he was going through some sort of
mental health crisis and that he completed this painting to tell us about it in a way that he knew how. film “Garden State”, Graff returned home to attend his mother’s funeral. In the topic of mental health, all through the movie it is seen where there are times when Graff goes through serious mental health crises such as depression and loss of happiness. The grief that Graff feels over the loss of his mother and the pain that it has caused him, causes him to re-evaluate the situation and find a way to forgive himself for the blame he felt over his mother’s death. I think that throughout the movie, there are multiple situations where the topic of mental health sticks out giving the audience a sense of the topic. When it comes to the topic, the audience can make sense of the topic as it relates to society by seeing what the creative works were produced for in the first place. The topic of mental health is clearly seen and can be perceived just by reviewing creative works. 2. Gogh’s “Starry Night” has changed society in many ways as I believe, as analysis and history have provided us. I think that after one visits and sees his painting and conducts their research, society can see the topic of mental health in a different light. It is said that Gogh had bipolar disorder. A review of the painting by Markku Kostamo shows that, Gogh was depressed, and, in the painting, Gogh’s current mental health is shown in the d escription of the painting, “The depths of depression are easy to identify in the darkness, as is Van Gogh’s self -identification in the ark silho uette of the cypress” In “Garden State”, when Graff returns to his hometown to attend his mother's funeral he was going through a lot of grief and depression. Reviews of the movie show that Graff was feeling grief of his mother’s death because he thought it was his f ault because of the way he treated her in the past. There are times in the film that Graff went through times when he faced mental health crises, giving the audience a clear picture of Graff and his times of depression and misdirection in life. 3. When it comes to other generations of people viewing these creative works, I believe they would have a different outlook on the topic of mental health as it relates to the topic of mental health. In a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, it is said that “Culture influences the meanings that people impart to their illness. Consumers of mental health services, whose cultures vary between and within grou ps, naturally carry this diversity directly to service setting”. People of diverse cultures may have a challenging time understanding creative works because all people are different, and they may not have access to certain information such as mental health. 4. The creative works have a way of showing empathy to the audience in many ways. For example, in “Starry Night’, Gogh puts his depression and pain into this painting. When a viewer decides to study his painting for the hi storical nature of Gogh’s meaning behind th e painting, they can relate to his depression with feelings of their own by being able to relate to him more. Another example, in “Garden State” one could show empathy and relate to Graff if they had lost someone in their life, they would be able to connect to Graff in ways that others cannot if they have not lost someone in their life. In” Starry Night” I believe that this painting could produce empathy. In my personal belief, I think that Gogh through his painting is giving others the mindset that they can cope with their mental health illness through works of art. In “Garden State”, it is also my belief that this film could produce empathy. People who view this movie can see that even though Graff lost his mother and that it was a challenging time for him, he continued to live and do what he thought his mother thought would be best for him. Part Three: Identity and the Humanities 1. Self-identity is a term we use when we identify who we truly are as a person, such as what do we do or what are the habits that we have that make us. Humanities is a term used to describe the culture of humans and the study of humans. A study by the University of Arizona shows us that Humanities is, “ Humanities is the study of humans in the individual, cultural, societal and
experiential sense” Creative works aid us in finding ourselves, for example, art is a way we can express our feelings. We can paint a painting for instance, that painting could have certain characters or symbols in the art that express our emotions or feelings. Creative works, such as literature, art, music, and film, have a profound impact on how individuals perceive themselves. 2. Sociocultural factors influence identity construction in multiple ways, for example, culture influence's identity based on several factors. Our traditions or values that we learn over time growing up show us that sociocultural factors influence identity. Another example would be race. A particular race can trace back to past generations and learn from them. 3. Different subject areas of humanities allow us to understand our identity in ways we thought impossible. For instance, one humanity like literature can be different than a play when it comes to finding ourselves. For example, I like to read so I would use the humanity of literary art to identify myself. Identity is a salient aspect in the humanities as groups and individuals express, explore, and challenge their conception of themselves. 4. Diverse perspectives can influence self-concept in a lot of ways. For example, when we look at others and hear them discussing their strengths and weaknesses, we can then take that and re- evaluate ourselves to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and make the proper changes as we go. Another example would be the influence of the media, when we listen to a certain radio station for instance, we can use what we hear to identify ourselves.
