Curiosity – Wellness Worksheet UNIV 1001 What is mindfulness? 1. the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. 2. a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. What does it have to do with curiosity? When we choose to slow down and be mindful of our whole selves, it makes room for us to be curious about how our bodies feel, what thoughts we are thinking, what stories we are telling ourselves that contribute to our everyday actions. Mindfulness creates space for curiosity of all types. Instructions: 1. Dedicate at least 20 minutes of uninterrupted time for this exercise. The goal is to be mindful about and more deeply consider your individual wellness journey. 2. Eliminate distractions – put your phone away, no multitasking, in a place where you can focus and be fully present to yourself. Exercise: 1. Consider the 8 aspects of wellness pictured below. On a scale of 1-10, give yourself a wellness score in each of the 8 categories (1= I pay little attention to this aspect of wellness and/or feel stressed or unhealthy in this area and 10= This area of wellness is extremely important to me, and I have developed consistent practices to stay healthy in this area.) Score: 8 7 9 8 9 9 7 5 2. Choose two of your highest scores and reflect on these areas using the following questions: What are two words that describe how you feel about these aspects of wellness (you can use the feelings wheel on the next page to help generate ideas)? Two of my highest schools are physical and occupational. Occupation is high for me because I want to make it far in the career path that I want to go and I am very nervous about that. It is going to be a very difficult time and I know I am going to have some hard times throughout the adventure. My physical wellness was also pretty high. One of the things that makes me genuinely happy is taking care of my body. It makes me feel more confident. Briefly (2-3 sentences) talk about why you think these are strong areas of wellness for you (i.e. practicing with others, certain privileges, habits you’ve developed over time that are now a regular part of life, etc.). I think highly about these areas because of my parents. Both of my parents are very successful in their workplaces. They also both care about their bodies. Since a young age they have taught me to care about my physical health.
3. Choose two of your lowest scores and reflect on those areas using the following questions: What are two words that describe how you feel about these aspects of wellness (you can use the feelings wheel on the next page to help generate ideas)? Two of my closest are spiritual and social. I am not a very spiritual person. I do think everything happens for a reason but that is about it. It has never really been a big thing in my life. Next is social. I am a very outgoing person but I am content with very few friends. I like to be friends with people that I can trust. Briefly (2-3 sentences) talk about why you think these are more difficult areas of wellness for you (i.e. finding time, relationship dynamics, mental health diagnoses, developed long-term habits, etc.). I think these two are very low for me just because of the way I have matured. I grew up with not many spiritual followings and it kinda stayed that way. The social aspect has been different. Throughout the years I have learned that people are fake. I have found my close friends that actually want the best for me and I want to keep it that way. Take some extra time to be more curious about these areas of your life. When you think about these areas for a longer period of time, how does your body feel? What main words or phrases pop into your head? Do you talk about these areas with other people? Can you identify anything that would be helpful in improving these areas? What questions do you have for yourself or for others about these areas of your life? Write your reflections/questions here:
