Assignment #1- Personal Goals Paper This paper explores and reflects upon three self-growth goals aligned with the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) of a course focused on human diversity and social justice. The PLOs emphasize demonstrating awareness and sensitivity in working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, engaging in reflective practice, and gaining a greater understanding of one's own identity within society. Additionally, I
will be outlining specific, measurable goals for self-growth in these areas and provide a framework for evaluating progress throughout the course.
The first PLO goal that stood out from the syllabus that I would like to explore further is "
Human Diversity and Social Justice." More specifically, to be able to "demonstrate awareness and sensitivity in working with individuals from various cultural backgrounds." I have always had a strong interest in social justice and committed myself to further educating myself on worldly topics. As a Jewish Iranian woman, I have struggled countless times and have dealt with antisemitism to various degrees. I would continue to educate others and break the stereotypes that have been brainwashed and ingrained into individuals' minds. I want to continue learning about being allies for different backgrounds and cultures. By the end of the course, I would like to have actively engaged in at least three cultural exchange opportunities (e.g., workshops, group
discussions, interviews) with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. These interactions will include both formal and informal settings.
The second PLO goal I would like to explore is "
Reflective Practice." This will allow me to practice self-awareness, including self-analysis and observation, to improve my professional skills. After every significant class or learning activity, I will measure this goal by completing a reflective journal entry. Each entry will identify at least one concept, idea, or experience that challenged my perspective or prompted self-analysis. Lastly, a CLO goal I would like to better understand throughout this course is, (CLO1). I want to gain a greater understanding of my own identity in terms of my position in society. This CLO excites me because I always learn so much about myself and continue to self-reflect. I will measure this goal by engaging in structured identity exploration exercises such as self-
assessments, identity mapping, or writing identity narratives. I will evaluate my progress throughout the quarter from beginning to end.
In conclusion, during this course, I aim to enhance and practice my cultural competence, self-awareness, and understanding of my societal position. Regularly assessing my progress towards these goals will enable me to evaluate the impact of my learning journey effectively. Ultimately, these efforts will contribute to my personal and professional growth in alignment with the course's intended outcomes.
