Module 2, Part 1 – Two Essays
The single object I picked from Chapter 7 is the “Wall With Torah Niche.” (7-3) I picked
this object because I feel that it shows a great comparison to “Wall Painting, Villa of the
Mysteries” (6-20) The first similarity I notice is that both of these artworks were found in
houses. The Torah Niche was found in a
synagogue
, and the Villa of the Mysteries was
found in the corner of a suburban villa. Although synagogues are known as a place of
worship, this time period had instances of turning homes into religious buildings. Secondly,
both of these pieces are
narrative art
that tells a story. For example, the “Wall With
Torah Niche” tells the story of Jewish redemption, and the “Wall Painting, Villa of the
Mysteries” tells the story of the initiation of a cult.
1. “Religious Harmony” – 6 points.
Today when we think about the relationships between Muslims, Christians, and Jews, we
often think of them as hostile to each other. Yet they all believe in the same diety, and it is
clear looking at some of the art of the past that they borrowed from each other - at least
artistically.
Choose
one object from Chapter 8
that demonstrates collaboration, admiration or
influence between Muslims and the monotheistic cultures that came before them.
Your answer should:
1.
Identify (title and figure number)
and
describe
the object, and then,
2.
Explain
what features it exhibits that suggest a positive look toward either a Christian or
Jewish object that came before it.
ID that object
clearly too.
The single object I picked from Chapter 8 is the “Yusuf Fleeing Zulayhka” (8-19). I picked
this object because I noticed the Muslim collaboration with the Jewish
Torah
. In this piece,
Yusuf/Joseph flees the wife of his master’s seduction. I know that this piece exhibits respect for
Jewish art and religion because the idea that Joseph is Jewish is still told and it paints a praised
view of Joseph in the scenario he is in. I also noticed that in (7-4) “Ritual Objects, Celestial
Diagram, and the Sacrifice of Isaac” there is a similarity in the abstract patterns and vibrant color
scheme.
