Due Thursday Science fiction/fantasy (SFF) and literary fiction are both genres that help sharpen children’s imagination as well as develop their social-emotional maturity. Reading literature helps teach children compassion and empathy by allowing them to imagine life from another perspective. Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: How would you define social-emotional maturity in children? Provide an example and support your definition with a reference from a reliable source. How do contemporary works of juvenile fiction compare with the legends and fairy tales of ancient lore in helping children develop their imagination and moral compass? In what way do you believe contemporary fiction provides the same type of moral direction as the fairy tales and legends we have studied earlier? Provide at least 1 example to support your position. Share 1 reading you encountered this week that you feel is helpful in developing empathy and emotional maturity and explain how the reading fosters these qualities in children. Due Monday Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional. Social emotional maturity in young children is when they are able to identify feelings of themselves and others, problem solve, and build healthy relationships. The article I found defined social emotional maturity as the ability to experience, manage, and express their feelings while exploring their environment. The source noted children’s maturity is always growing from toddler age through adolescence. Fairy tales that have been retold throughout time were created with the purpose to entertain children and fables were created to have a lesson for children to learn right from wrong. I do think contemporary fiction offers the same benefits as older fairy tales and fables. As long as parents and educators are able to discuss and breakdown the story with children and help them grasp a better understanding of the stories. The Capture of Father Time expressed different emotions throughout the tale. If this was made into a book for children with illustrations they could use imagery to help show children the
different emotions. For example when the cowboy felt joy from being able to ride through the field and tossing his lasso the illustrator could show that through facial expressions in pictures. If children were able to see the different emotions in characters it could offer an opportunity to have a discussion on why they might be feeling that way and how to fix it. The tone in the story changes from character to character also. The cowboy is calm and care free while the old man is rigid and avoids people.
