Midterm Exam Study Guide
The midterm will begin promptly at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 1. The midterm exam has three parts and should take 60 minutes to complete. You will be provided with an exam paper. Blue books are not needed.
The instructor will hold a chat session on Gauchospace on Sunday, April 30, 5:00-6:00pm. The transcript of the chat will be available on Gauchospace after the session has ended.
A note on spelling: You have been presented with a number of foreign names and words that have unusual spellings. You will not be docked points for misspelling Nahuatl, Mayan, or Spanish words. HOWEVER, your spelling needs to be close enough to the correct term to be understood. Part I:
Objective questions (15 minutes, 30 points total)
This section of the exam will test you on information, terms, and objects from lectures, readings, and section. Questions will be in the form of multiple choice, true/false, circling correct terms, and/or fill in the blanks. Some questions will be associated with images on the screen.
Study tips: Read through your lecture notes. Find a study partner to help fill in any gaps in your notes. Go through the slides from lectures posted on Gauchospace. Make sure you can define or describe all of the terms listed. Make sure you know the significance of the images posted. Go over your weekly reading questions and refresh yourself on the arguments of each reading.
Part II:
Identify unknown objects (7.5 minutes/15 points each, 15 minutes/30 points total)
There will be two short answer identifications in this section. For each, you will be presented with an image of an object that we have not
seen in class but was produced by one of the cultures we have studied. First, you must identify the culture to which the object ascribes. Then, in short answer format (using full sentences), explain your identification by referring to formal and
iconographic
elements of the object. Do not
interpret the object, rather rely on visual information and its associated terms to show your knowledge of the art styles we have discussed in class. To receive full credit, you must present at least 4
formal and/or iconographic elements that correctly associate the object with the culture.
Study tips: Look closely at the images uploaded to Gauchospace. Visit image links posted on Gauchospace to familiarize yourself with a range of objects associated with the cultures we have studied.
Part III:
Essay (30 minutes, 40 points total)
You will be provided with one of the following prompts. You must answer the entire question in a clear, organized essay with a thesis statement. A thesis statement consists of one or two sentences that clearly and concisely outline an argument that you will prove through supporting

evidence. To support your answer, refer to specific objects (title or brief description) and sites (by name, spelled close enough to be recognized). Cite assigned readings where appropriate.
Cities and ceremonial centers impose a built order upon nature and people through their overall plans, architecture, and monuments. How did Mesoamerican sites manipulate the environment as well as inhabitants/visitors? Using three examples (one from each culture), compare and contrast the form (visual and material elements) and content (messages) of Mesoamerican sites.
People construct concepts of the cosmos to negotiate their place within the known and unknown worlds. How are Mesoamerican understandings of the cosmos expressed through material culture? Using three examples of art/architecture (one from each culture), describe the ways that Mesoamericans explained and explored their relationship with the cosmos.
One major function of art in Mesoamerica was to promote the power of rulers. Using three examples (one from each culture), discuss how art/architecture was employed by those holding power. How did material culture function to proclaim, legitimize, and reinforce the status of rulers?
Study tips: Write outlines and thesis statements for all three questions. Familiarize yourself with objects that you will use to support your answer (i.e., be able to briefly describe them or name them). Write practice essays.
