1 An Exploration of Art-Making Approaches | Part 2 - Outdoor Installation
2 An Exploration of Art-Making Approaches | Part 2 - Outdoor Installation I live in the mountains, so my inspiration is the natural beauty of our home. I decided I wanted to use a local place that people could hike to, so I picked our Arboretum. It is a short hiking trail where locals and people visiting come to see the beauty of the mountain. My outdoor installation will complement the location and blend in using all-natural items. My sketches included using sticks, rocks, or leaves. It all depended on what materials would be available on the walking trail.
3 I enjoyed the video of Truman Lowe working with students to create the outdoor art installation. I like that the installation was to honor the Mississippian culture (PBS Learning Media, 2021). It was really cool to see how they used the branches and sticks to make the “teepees”. Knowing that the area that I wanted to use was public hiking I wanted to make it something that was not in the way of the walking path but still was pretty to see and peaceful. So, I went with the Zen-like rock tower”. I started with finding what would be the top rock and the rocks after(below) would be larger and get larger. I kept finding larger rocks to start at the bottom, and that fit the similar rock structure of my design.

4 The process was a lot of fun, and I did not want to bring anything else into the area as we are a National Forest, so Leave No Trace was all I was thinking about. That this design is things found in nature and is not disturb the wildlife in the area. This location is important to me and my community because it allows you to hike the mountain and see some of the beauty the mountain holds. I believe my installation communicates the significance of the location because it is a “Zen” tower, it shows that there is beauty around us.
