CULTURAL EXPERIENCE REPORT FORM
NAME: __Breighton Flores_______________________________________ DATE: ____02/25/24__________________ ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE: 1. Title of the experience you chose:
I chose to listen to the opera “Don Giovanni” composed by Mozart
2. Time and place of the event:
Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni" is set in Seville, Spain, during the 17th century. The opera was first performed in Prague in 1787. 3. Type of event: (play, film, art exhibition, musical concert, etc.)
The event I chose would be categorized as an opera
4. Briefly describe the circumstances under which you participated in this assignment. Include
how these circumstances affected your overall experience. I experienced this opera in the comfort of my own bedroom. This comfortable environment allowed me to tune out the real world, and just engage in the opera and what it had to offer. 5. Why did you choose this event? Would you change this choice? Why or why not? I chose this event because I have only seen one other opera in my life, and this assignment seemed like a great opportunity for me to explore a dying art form that was so easily embraced by earlier societies.
ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THE ACTIVITY:
6. What did you enjoy most about the activity you chose? Were there elements that enhanced your experience? Give examples from the movie, art, or architecture. You may also give examples from your Godawa text. (Do not describe your experience completing the assignment
or elements not related to the content of the activity.)
There are many elements in this opera that have the ability to enhance a viewer's experience, my experience was impacted by the following. The opera's storyline is a mix of drama, comedy, and supernatural elements. The character of Don Giovanni, a charismatic and unrepentant seducer, adds intrigue and excitement to the narrative. The opera features a diverse cast of characters, each with their own personality and motivations. From the charming but morally questionable Don Giovanni to the vengeful Donna Elvira and the comedic servant Leporello. These characters
bring depth and complexity to the story. Mozart's musical composition is a highlight of "Don Giovanni." The opera is filled with beautiful duets and ensemble pieces that showcase Mozart's mastery of melody and harmony. The score is both emotionally resonant and technically impressive. "Don Giovanni" seamlessly combines elements of comedy and tragedy. The opera
can be humorous in one moment and deeply poignant in the next, creating a dynamic and engaging experience for the audience.
7. What did you like least about the activity you chose? Do you feel that these things unduly affected your attitude towards the activity you chose? Give examples from the movie, art, or architecture. You may also give examples from your Godawa text. (Do not describe your experience completing the assignment or elements not related to the content of the activity.)
While Mozart's "Don Giovanni" is widely regarded as a masterpiece, my experience was negatively impacted from a few of my own individual preferences. "Don Giovanni" is a full-
length opera with multiple acts, and I found the duration a bit lengthy. Being a member of modern society ,modern audiences (myself included) are accustomed to shorter forms of entertainment and may find it demanding to commit to the entire opera. The opera is typically performed in its original Italian, which posed a challenge for me because I am not familiar with the language. I would have preferred the opera in my native language or with subtitles to better understand the nuances of the storyline. The character of Don Giovanni is morally ambiguous, engaging in questionable actions throughout the opera. I found it challenging to sympathize or connect with a protagonist whose behavior is not conventionally virtuous.
8. What was the worldview for the activity you chose? Choose from those found in your Godawa text. How did the content represented in your activity compare or contrast with your Christian worldview? Give examples from the activity you chose. (Do not describe your experience completing the assignment or elements not related to the content of the activity.) The character of Don Giovanni embodies individualism and autonomy, pursuing his desires without concern for societal norms or moral constraints. This aligns with themes of individual freedom and self-determination. This worldview does not correlate with my own. The protagonist in this opera is not constrained by his own moral compass. Honestly, the protagonist lacks the existence of a personal moral compass
. 9. Would you recommend this activity to a friend? Why or Why Not? Yes I would recommend this opera to a friend due to its all around unique nature. In today's society we are not interested in complex stories such as those portrayed in the opera format, but after this activity I believe it is an important art style that should be cherished and experienced.
10. Submit a reflection report based on what you saw, heard, and/or read in the course of your
experience. Refer also to the instructions given with your experience. This reflection
I recently had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of classical opera by watching an online performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni." This experience was not only educational
but also deeply enriching, offering a glimpse into the timeless beauty of Mozart's compositions and the captivating storytelling within the realm of opera.
The online platform allowed me to enjoy the performance from the comfort of my own space, and despite the digital format, the production successfully conveyed the grandeur and complexity of the opera. The set design and costumes transported me to the era of Don Giovanni,
creating a visually stunning backdrop for the unfolding drama.
One of the most striking aspects of the performance was the vocal prowess of the cast. The arias, duets, and ensemble pieces showcased the incredible range and power of the singers. The emotive delivery of the libretto added an extra layer of depth to the characters, making the narrative even more compelling. In particular, the portrayal of Don Giovanni himself was masterful, capturing the character's charisma, arrogance, and eventual downfall with great nuance.
In terms of the production's technical aspects, the online format presented both advantages and challenges. On the positive side, the close-up shots allowed me to appreciate the facial expressions and subtle nuances of the performers. However, there were moments when the limitations of the digital medium became apparent, such as in the absence of the immediate, visceral connection one might experience in a live performance.
Reflecting on this experience, I realize that Mozart's "Don Giovanni" is a masterpiece that transcends time and medium. The themes of love, betrayal, and the consequences of one's actions
remain universally relevant. This online performance not only deepened my appreciation for classical opera but also sparked a curiosity to explore more of Mozart's works and delve into the broader world of operatic productions.
