2-6 Part One: Artifacts and Theme Selection The two artifacts that I chose to analyze is two R&B songs that were both created by two different R&B artists. The first song is titled “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know” written
and performed by Donny Hathaway. This song was released in the year of 1973 and was a part of one of his major project/albums “Extension of a Man”. The physical setting for this song was Detroit in the United States of America. The second song is titled “Love Again” written and performed by Alex Isley, daughter of known and famous performer Ronald Isley that was apart of the Isley Brothers. This song was released in the year of 2022. The physical setting for this was in California in the United States of America. The first common theme that I want to acknowledge is the R&B genre. Although these songs were created fifty years apart, they still share the same rhythm and flow of a R&B love song. The second common theme that I want to acknowledge is the songs and lyric similarity. These are two completely different songs, with different lyrics but the two artists managed to share their experiences about love that aligned with each other songs. Donny Hathaway sung about loving his wife more than she would ever be able to understand and Alex Isley song about a man that she’s in love with giving her a reason to love again, feel again, and trust a relationship
again. Since both songs are expressing why they are happy to love and be in love that example shows why it is strong enough to hold as a common theme. So, the two themes that are focused on with these two artifacts is R&B which is the song genre and Love which is the meaning for both songs.
The theme of love is related to my personal experience because I can honestly say that I have felt this way about my partner since we have become one. He’s given me a reason to love
3
and every single day I feel like there’s no way he could ever understand the love that I have for him.
