Portfolio Activity 1.2.1 The author touches on the bias in the word primitive and how it has been twisted to mean that non-western dances are simplistic, monolithic, and require no skill. Instead, the author introduces the concept that there are simply dances performed by primitive people, but that primitive dances do not exist. Primitive dance isn’t a viable term because the definition has been distorted. At first primitive was simply in reference to somethings relative age to the inception of society, but now its racist undertones cloud the words true meaning. It leads people to believe that that myriad of non-western dances live simultaneously under one umbrella. This umbrella doesn’t allow for different dance cultures to stand alone for what they are. 1.2.2 High Art – Hamilton by Lin Manuel Miranda Popular Art – Renaissance by Beyonce There are many factors that distinguish high art from popular art . In looking at Renaissance and Hamilton the differences are apparent. The musical Hamilton is a Broadway show performed in select cities at price points beyond what the average American consumer can afford. The show touches on subjects that most Americans have little interest in and it most in line with what elite populations would be interested in hearing. In contrast, Renaissance is an album available on all streaming services that covers topics like, living through a pandemic, love, work, sexuality, and so much more. This type of content is relatable to wider audience and is available for free to anyone with a Wi-Fi connection via platforms like YouTube and the radio. 1.2.3 The points raised by Nur Amin only assist in helping showcase how thoughts around dance need to change. Amin touches on how dance in an undergraduate setting, is centered on Eurocentric dance styles and practices that only alienate diverse student populations. It also pigeonholes dance into an area that doesn’t allow for the total exploration of dance in an academic setting. In order to rectify this situation, a medium like African dance could and should be used to decentralize western dance as the standard form.
1.2.4 As a paraprofessional, it’s easy to see how hierarchies in the curriculum showcase themselves. In school settings, it’s clear to see that most schools inherently tell you that things like math, science, English, and history are more important than things like cooking class, art, music, or anything else. It’s easy to see when you look at the time allocated for these subjects. A student will have their four “main” subjects every day but may only have their electives once or twice a week. It’s important people have the basics skills necessary to survive in any society, but we often end up taking time away from students when they could be working towards something that maybe more fruitful for their life.
