School Board Meeting - Field Experience
Every school district holds school board meetings. This is a time for important information to
be discussed and the public to be heard about concerns within the district. I had the opportunity
to attend the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) school board meeting held on September 18
th
.
Throughout this paper I will discuss the school board meeting and what items were discussed,
who was in attendance, how items were presented as well as what I have learned from the
meeting and how I will use that information as a teacher.
The first item on the agenda was a roll call of the board members. CPS has seven board
members, only five were in attendance. Due to there being so many absent board members the
president asked to vote to skip the second agenda item of the 3-month board priorities until all
members are present. Everyone agreed to skip this agenda item until all board members are
present. The third agenda item was superintendent updates. During this time CPS’s
superintendent Iranetta Wright took the time to congratulate the national merit scholar of the
2024 semifinalists at each school within the district. The other update Ms. Wright had was from
the community feedback sessions that were held in July. I personally found this second important
because she was able to show the community with data points that the school board is listening
to and trying to make the changes to the issue the community has brought to the attention of the
school board.
One of the most important agenda items was the fourth item is hearing from the public.
This is a time for the public to step forward and bring attention to any concerns they have about
the district whether it be about a specific school or the whole district. The CPS school board did
a great job of allowing those in person time to speak as well as those viewing the meeting
virtually. This allows for more community members to be able to be heard and voice their
options. Parents, students, and additional community members were able to speak and express
their concerns about the district. There were nine people who came forward during this time. All
nine people discussed climate change and how they would like CPS to make a change to use
clean energy. Everyone who stepped forward to speak had two minutes to speak. During this
time the board gave them their attention, with some members taking notes, the rest of the public
sat silently listening to the speaker. During this time the board did not reply to any of the
concerns and addressed that they will either add these concerns to the agenda for the next board
meeting and/or a board member will personally reach out to them about their concern.
The fifth agenda item was approval of minutes. This was a time for the board members to
agree or disagree on the minutes of past meetings. Discussing this allows the board members to
agree that what the minutes say is true and that was what was discussed. Therefore, in the future
there can be no disagreement about what was discussed. The sixth item was resolutions. This was
when they discussed past concerns that were brought forward to the board and what the
resolutions were to the concerns. The final item was asking the board if they had any additional
questions or concerns that need to be discussed.
In attendance were parents, students, family of students, and community members. Most
of the people were there in support of climate change and having CPS make cleaner choices of
energy. This was something that surprised me but at the same time didn’t surprise me. Most of
the people in attendance were people who were white and attended the “nicer” CPS schools. This
did not surprise me because the schools in our district who need the most support are those who
already feel they aren’t being seen or heard so they don’t always take the time to come to
additional meeting like this or may have other obligations such as work that doesn’t allow them
to attend to be able to be heard.

The president, Ben Lindy, was the person who led the meeting. Throughout the whole
meeting all members have chances to speak and voice their own comments or concerns about the
topic at hand. The whole board meeting was civil, there was never a time that voices were raised,
or inappropriate tones were used within the discussions.
One thing I learned from attending the school board meeting was that not all the real
problems are being discussed. Issues that are being discussed are issues that are outside the
school or within the big picture, but the small issues in the small picture or the issues within the
school buildings were not being discussed. In the future I will use this information to help myself
and my team members to bring issues to the board and not just within the school but to the
school board themselves.
In conclusion, school board meetings are an important time for discussion. As a teacher I
will be attending more school board meetings and will bring my concerns to the discussion as
well. School board meetings are a time for everyone within the school district to be seen and
heard.
