1. Why should the literary arts be integrated into science, social studies, math, and other
subjects?
Integrating literary art into different subjects helps with the understanding of the arts, along with
writing and reading. This is to include word-based materials (printed, digital and multimedia
texts). Literary arts can be distinct word-based print art forms, that are integrated into the
classrooms by teachers for decades. This is even more so for the language art curriculum.
Literary arts come in all genres, it can be fiction or nonfiction, poetry, or all of them. This could
include reading aloud daily, reading independently, and/or in small groups-based literature
instructions. Literary arts can be interweaved as core information source for science, math, social
studies, and even in history. This can give real life images of historical figures and faces to the
facts of science. Literary arts can be available for nonfiction for nearly every topic, studies are no
longer limited to one textbook. Studies show that math can have a great storyline as well. The
textbook states that Russell (1994), wrote that children’s literature is a significant form of literary
art for Art Integration. It has the ability to inspire aesthetic response and produce profound
understanding, which widens the opportunity and the enjoyment of reading in all children. If
there were no reading, the philosophies of the past would be gone endlessly and sent into the
world with nothing. The other reasons as to why to integrate literary arts into other subjects is
that it will add arts power to literacy, support active meaning construction, build empathy and
respect for others, deepen understanding, give comfort and insight (bibliotherapy), fulfill
aesthetic needs, provoke inquiry, stimulate moral thinking, reveal cultural and historical heritage,
increase inquiry, increase literacy, vehicles for learning social studies, math, and science, and
combat illiteracy and aliteracy.
2. What do teachers need to know to meaningfully integrate the literary arts?
Teachers need to have literary understanding for meaningful integration. It contains background
knowledge in the
following:
•
History and definitions of children’s literature
•
Literary elements
•
Literary genres, forms, or types
•
Selection sources for good literature
•
Authors and artists of children’s literature
•
Common Core Standards for the English Language Arts
•
Literary meaning-making strategies, especially how to read and write literature
•
Approaches to teaching and comprehending literary content
3. How can classroom teachers collaborate with arts specialists and artists to plan and
implement literary arts integration?
The teachers and arts specialists/artists will come together to plan a joint lesson. Equally, the
content area and the arts area will be described during the planning and through the lesson. The
teachers and arts specialist/artists will also construct the assessment that will assess both the
content area and the arts rightly.
