Module 5 Short-Answer Questionnaire ITA 423 Module 5 Questionnaire Final Word Count: 519 In this short essay we will go over the films Excellent Cadavers and The Mafia Only Kills in Summer and explain how they both differ in their stylistic approaches. I will attempt to describe both film meanings and narratives through quotes from Dana Renga's book Mafia Movies and from my own understanding of watching the films. Before we even begin i will say that one film is more of a documentary while the other is a “true” movie and a comedy at that. These two films “Excellent Cadavers” And “The Mafia Only Kills in Summer” differ in many ways but before I dive into that I will begin by talking about each film's goals and narratives. In Dana Renga's explanation of Excellent Cadavers she states “Turco’s film attempts to make a case against the future re-election of Berlusconi. Excellent Cadavers is structured like a journey, and the narrative style is akin to that of a classic tragedy and concludes by reminding the viewer that past catastrophes might indeed repeat themselves. Like other Italian contemporary documentaries I will discuss later, Excellent Cadavers works as a memento for the public by turning attention to a national trauma.” ( Renga 289) What I took away the most from this movie ( Excellent Cadavers) was its documentary style which aimed for more historical accuracy, which I believe provokes the audience to feel
Module 5 Short-Answer Questionnaire connected to the real struggles against the Mafia, like depicted in the film. While all of the real interviews and real world coverage of the past mafia problems and various terrorist like acts really provides an informative overview of the italian mafia at the time and the people fighting against them. All provide the viewer with a great historically accurate documentary that allows the viewer to see the Mafia in a real world setting and not a glamorized movie. While I believe the film "The Mafia Only Kills in Summer," directed by Pierfrancesco Diliberto, differs is that this film is more lighthearted and satirical. The film uses much more humor and irony to highlight the absurdity of the Mafia’s violence, which creates many memorable scenes due to its comedy. Which in my opinion is actually similar to both films which is that they are trying to depict the mafia in a bad light instead of a positive like many american films do. But the major differences between the two are their use of film and storytelling; one is historically accurate while the other is less serious. All in all both of these films were wonderful to watch and I really liked how the directors each chose different ways to tell a story about the mafia in their own way, historically accurate or not. Each film provides a different perspective on the subject but they ultimately have the same goal and narrative to provide to the audience each evoking emotion in different ways. Although both movies are honestly completely different as one is a documentary and the other is a comedy they both are great movies that overlap in some ways.
