Yahti Washington-Knight Baroque Textbook Assignment Music Appreciation How is the church’s doctrine of heaven and hell represented here through music? Where do you hear hell? Where do you hear heaven? The majestic sound, dramatic authority, and driving rhythm is evident in this music. The dramatic authority definitely gives me the sound of hell and the upbeat sounds are heaven. The bass clarinet, horns, trumpets, and lower tone sounds from various instruments are hell representation. The harps, clarinets and softer tunes are representation of heaven. When I continue to listen to the music, it reminds me of several horror films in Western culture. I was able to further investigate and found out it was adapted by conductor Leopold Stokowski and used in several horror films which solidifies the hell vibes I hear. What does Bach scientifically experiment with dynamics, different tone colors, and developing short motifs? Dynamics-he used a mixture of all types of textures like monophonic, homophonic, and polyphonic. Tone Colors-the colors represent intervals in scales, musical notes, and sound. Developing Motifs or Ideas-during the music, there intervals where each reiterated a short motif and doubled at the octave. Match the instruments on the left with their role on the right. Violin 1 Leader Violin 2 Follower 1 Violin 3 Follower 2 Lute Ground bass Cello Arpeggiates Organ Ground bass Is Pachelbel’s Canon also a round? No, but there are aspects of it that make you think of a round. How do you know? Pachelbel uses the techniques of 3 instruments in a round. He also adds a basso base line which is working independently and not exactly a round which is a perpetual canon in which the same melody is in unison. Which two instruments would be considered the biggest wheel rolling in a slow cycle? Cello and Lute Which instrument is playing the fastest cycle or smallest gear? Cello

Yahti Washington-Knight Baroque Textbook Assignment Music Appreciation How does Bach create dramatic energy in sound that compares to the visual energy made from marble by Bernini? The St. John was a dramatic musical depiction of the Passion of Christ as told by the Gospel of John. It depicts the horrible capture, judgment, and crucifixion, as outlined in biblical passages from John 18 and 19, are presented by the solo tenor (the Evangelist). The sculpture of David is a religious piece of art that depicts the meeting of the heaven realms and earth through the vision of a saint. Find the Rembrandt self-portrait from the Baroque period using Google. Rembrandt is known as the greatest painter of room lighting in history. How is Rembrandt’s use of lighting similar to Baroque ethos: Heaven and hell contrast and illusion and dramatic energy? Fully illumination and shadow which can be described as light and dark, bright and dem. What is the shape that Bach uses as the limitation for his creativity? It is a collection of pieces pulled together and in perfect order using six movements like prelude, allemande, courante, Sarabande, etc. The piece is orderly and without outside of the box creativity. Based on your listening and research, do you think Bach was a conservative perfectionist or a revolutionary scientist restlessly searching? Based on my listening and research, I believe he was of a conservative person and musician with a majestic sound and polyphonic style.
