Alder Assignment Essay

Excuses, aggression, and withdrawal are three of Alder’s safeguarding tendencies. With these tendencies, Alder believed people created these patterns to protect themselves against public disgrace. For this assignment we will be further discussing withdrawal, I chose this one because I often find myself doing this. According to (Feist, 2021), withdrawal means” safeguarding one’s exaggerated sense of superiority by establishing a distance between oneself and one’s problems.” There are four modes of safeguarding when it comes to withdrawing, moving backward, standing still, hesitating, and constructing obstacles. Moving backward happens when people revert to a more secure period of lifestyle. Standing still happens when the person doesn’t do anything to avoid failure. Hesitating happens when people avoid certain things, often using the excuse "It's too late now." Finally, constructing obstacles happens when people create barriers to their success, this allows them to protect their self-esteem by using the barrier as an excuse. (Feist, 2021)
Romans 16:17-20 states, "I appeal to you brothers to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord, but their appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but what I want to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet the grace of our Lord be with you." In this scripture, Jesus is telling us not to withdraw from him or ourselves.
Hosea chapter four shows us an example of God’s people withdrawing and how it can affect our relationship with him. Hosea 4:12 states, “My people consult a wooden idol, and divine’s rod speaks to them. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God.” People are doing the opposite of what God is telling them in this scripture, by giving into obstacles that he told them to avoid. Hosea 4:1-2 tells us that, “There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. There was only cursing, lying, and murder; stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.” Hosea people could have asked Jesus for forgiveness to help them overcome this withdrawal tendency. However, they kept avoiding their problems.
