3-1 Discussion: Cultural Works and Universal Ideas When you explore the concept of cultural works, you realize that you use, create, and observe cultural works in your everyday life without thinking much about it. In this discussion, you will analyze a cultural work from your daily life. First, choose a modern-day cultural work from one of the following categories, one that is different from the one you selected in the Module Two discussion: 1. A TV show episode, movie, podcast, or song of your choice (for example: the song "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, the movie Get Out, or an episode of the series Game of Thrones) 2. A painting, photograph, image from a social media post, or another work of art (for example: graffiti by the artist Banksy) 3. A brand, logo, or mascot (for example: Disney or the Nike "swoosh") 1. What universal idea does your cultural work represent? 2. What does the cultural work say about the culture in which it was created? 3. Discuss how your own individual assumptions, beliefs, and values might shape your opinions of the cultural work selected. Burnt Mona Lisa The cultural work I chose to go with for this weeks discussion is a picture of Mona Lisa that was burnt into a hillside in Toledo, Oregon by Sam (last name unknown). The original artist of the famous Mona Lisa painting we all know is Leonardo da Vinci. I chose this because people like to create art an all sorts of forms and in all sorts of places. This is something I had the opportunity to experience in person as I lived in a little town called Siletz, Oregon and we had to drive past where this was done right off the right side of highway 20 going into Newport, Oregon to go to school every day. The universal idea that this cultural work represents to me is that art is all around us, and takes on so many different manifestations. It also can last decades after its creation like the original Mona Lisa which is known as one of the most valuable paintings in the world and is currently located at the Louvre in Paris, France. Some artworks fade with time like the burnt version. Luckily people were able to snap a shot of this before it completely got overgrown with the landscape it was done on. Which in our technological world we live it will now last forever. The original Mona Lisa was a painting of a woman that was also known as La Gioconda, whom was the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The original painting was done on wood, and painted with oil paints. The original size was 30 inches by 20 7/8 inches. In the painting she is sitting in front of mountains, a river and a roadway in the background. As for the burnt Mona Lisa in the hillside my individual thoughts on it was that it was awesome to see something familiar but done is such a unique way. It influenced me to learn more about the original Mona Lisa painting and gain a deeper appreciate for it. As before I had no interests in the Mona Lisa painting. https://www.leonardodavinci.net/the-mona-lisa.jsp
Petroglyphs For your response posts, address the following: 1. Describe how your peers' posts changed your views, feelings, or opinions. 2.
