THE 100 Part 1: Character: Walter Lee Younger from "A Raisin in the Sun" What does each character want in the play? Walter Lee Younger wants to invest in a liquor store venture to achieve financial security and fulfill his aspirations of becoming a successful businessman. He sees this as an opportunity to improve his family's socio-economic status and provide a better future for them. What is the objective of each character in every scene? Walter's objective in each scene is to convince his family, particularly his mother, Lena, to support his business idea. He also wants to assert his role as the head of the family and gain respect and recognition. How does each character change during the action of the play? Walter Lee Younger experiences significant personal growth and transformation throughout the play. Initially, he is driven by materialistic ambitions and is somewhat selfish in his desires. However, as the play progresses and he faces various challenges, he begins to understand the importance of family, heritage, and self-respect. His perspective shifts, and he ultimately chooses to prioritize his family's well being over financial gain. What is at stake in the play? At stake in the play is the family's future and their ability to break free from the constraints of poverty and discrimination. The insurance money from Lena's husband's death represents a chance for a better life, and how it's used will significantly impact the family's dreams and aspirations. Where is the climax of the play? The climax of the play is when Walter rejects Mr. Lindner's offer to buy back the house to avoid moving into a white neighborhood. This decision represents Walter's ultimate transformation and acceptance of his responsibility as a father and a leader within the family. If the characters chose a different action in their confrontation of the obstacles, how might that change in the resultant action? If Walter chose to accept Mr. Lindner's offer and move away, the thematic message of resilience and fighting against racial discrimination and societal oppression would have been lost. The play's central message of preserving dignity and fighting for one's dreams despite adversity would not have been as powerful.
