Cultural topic:
Prayer in school
I have chosen to write about prayer in schools as a cultural identifier.
Many people believe prayer should not be allowed in schools, and protest getting it banned.
Seperation of Church and state
Engel VS Vitale
Banned bible reading in New York schools
There could no longer be state-mandated prayer, but individual was allowed.
Prayer in schools has been controversial for many years. Separation of church and state has been
the main driving force in the opposition to allowing prayer in schools. Many feel it is imposing
Christianity upon people who may have different beliefs.
Public opinion shows that states disagree with the supreme court's ruling of separating church
and state and that we are a Christian nation, and the public schools are not teaching our values.

Some people believe that schools are using religion to convert children since they are so
vulnerable at a young age. These people believe schools should just educate our children, and not
try to coerce them to be Christians.
Disallowing prayer in schools leaves the door open for students and families who are looking to
have Christian values taught to their children. Doing so can lead to lower school enrollment in
public schools. Parents might feel forced to enroll their children in private schools where they
can be taught under a Christian influence. Public schools may lose teachers who are of a strong
christen faith, because they will feel unable to share their beliefs, for fear of being fired.
Many districts have compromised and rather than promoting a Christian prayer, have opted for a
more neutral idea with the moment of silence in the morning. This allows those with different
beliefs to choose whether they pray, or just reflect upon the day ahead.

Part 2
Many believe that the public education system is there to simply educate our children with facts.
Teachers should stick to Math, English, and Science only, and follow the curriculum provided by
the schools. With the variety of religions in our nation today, when the schools bring Christianity
into it, they are seen as brainwashing children, because they are so young, and are easily
manipulated.
In the Santa Fe VS. Doe case, just as in many others, it was made clear that the majority of our
country's citizens wanted to have prayer in our schools. The courts seem to keep voting against
these cases citing the separation of church and state. This is despite many polls showing that the
public wants prayer to be in our schools.
The Supreme Court now protects teachers from retaliation when they share their views in public.
Students should be encouraged to ask questions and to feel free to inquire about subjects they are
not familiar with. It is with these hopes, that the supreme court protects teachers, so that they
may answer these questions, without being fired for doing so. The case Pickering VS. the board
of education did just this.
