Module Three Short Answer: Virtual Tour Joshua Minnick Information Technology Department, Southern New Hampshire University HUM-100 Perspectives in the Humanities Dr. Bob Studinger November 12, 2023 1
The two cultural works that caught my attention are a signed letter carried by Charles Lindbergh from New York to Paris during the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight ( Letter from inside Charles Lindbergh transatlantic flight cover ) and a hand-colored political print from 1861 with the subject being the preservation of the United States and the southern states secession ( The Eagle's nest The Union! ). The letter from Charles Lindbergh caught my attention because I’ve always found individuals who are willing to take great risks to succeed and push the abilities of humans to another level to be very inspiring and worthy of remembrance and praise. The political print caught my attention because I have always been fascinated by the Civil War period and the events and culture that led to so many American lives being destroyed by a war between the states. The letter from Charles Lindbergh reflects the time when aviation history was being made and the push by aviators to show their personal abilities and the abilities of their aircraft was becoming a priority in the United States. People were seeing the advancement in technology of the ability to travel by air in a method much faster than was ever known before. The solo flight by Lindbergh from New York to Paris and the letter he sent from Paris showed he had completed the flight, meaning this was not only possible, but had been accomplished. This letter represents the drive within humanity to continue to advance and I believe, the American spirit to push forward in all areas and advance to be the best at all things. Lindbergh’s letter is a symbol of the ability of a person who has a willingness to take a great risk for a great reward and achieve a place in history forever. The political print shows the feelings felt by many Americans during the 1860s after the secession by southern states from the Union. As depicted in the print, many Americans saw the people, especially those who had been members of the United States Congress before secession, 2
as traitors who deserved the punishment of death. The depiction of the states being eggs hatching animals considered to be distasteful shows how these men were seen as vile animals who had committed a horrible crime by supporting the secession. There are three eggs which are labeled with the words “addled”, “rotten”, and “bad egg” that have started to crack which represent slave states that did not secede from the union. I think this was done to show that although these states had not chosen to secede, they were still considered dangerous or unhealthy eggs because they allowed the abhorrent practice of slavery to continue. Overall, the imagery of this print shows what I believe would have been the general feelings of Americans who remained within the Union at the time of the civil war toward the states of the Confederacy. A question about a key aspect of human culture I would ask in relation to the letter from Charles Lindbergh would be, “What motivated Mr. Lindbergh to attempt such a dangerous feat as flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean?” This question would be in relation to the fact that flying across the Atlantic Ocean had been accomplished, but not by a solo pilot. This was an extremely dangerous flight that could have cost Mr. Lindbergh his life, and possibly caused him to be forgotten by history if he had failed. There are numerous ways I would research an answer to my question. The first would be to look for interviews with Mr. Lindbergh after his flight. I would use keywords such as “Lindbergh interview” or “Lindbergh speaks”. I would also search for articles about Mr. Lindbergh written around this time. I would use keywords such as “Transatlantic flight” or “New York to Paris in 1927”. I would also look for articles that discuss Mr. Lindbergh’s plane because of its iconic nature, which may also discuss the motivations of Mr. Lindbergh. Keywords for this search could be “Spirit of St. Louis” or “Charles Lindbergh’s Plane”. 3
