Module One Short Answer: Cultural Objects and Their Culture Joshua Minnick Information Technology Department, Southern New Hampshire University HUM-100 Perspectives in the Humanities Dr. Bob Studinger October 29, 2023 1
The three cultures or subcultures I most strongly identify with ranked from most to least significant would be the Christian culture, American culture, and the Cherokee subculture. My Christian faith is a very large part of my life and helps to guide my goals to be the best person I can be according to my faith and the beliefs and doctrines within the teachings of Christ. I am an American by birth and very proud to be from a country that while having its flaws, is continuing to strive to offer anyone who is willing to work hard and pursue their goals the chance to find success and have a healthy and happy life. I am also a member of the Cherokee Nation by birth and am very proud of my Native American heritage and culture. I have always been fascinated by the history of the Cherokee people and how my ancestors came to set up their tribal headquarters less than one hour from where I now live. A representative object from the Christian culture I identify with is the bible. The bible is a collection of books recording and explaining the relationship between God and humanity. I personally identify with the bible because I believe following the teachings within the bible, specifically the New Testament as I am a Christian, offers the best template for how to have a successful and happy life. Following the teachings of Christ, I believe, will lead a person to find happiness and fulfillment even when facing adversity or despair. The bible offers historical significance, educational basis for how to live a better life, and most obviously the religious iconography to millions of believers around the world of different sects and beliefs within this wide cultural umbrella. A representative object from the American culture I identify with is the American flag. I think the American flag is uniquely created to show the American culture because it holds symbolism of both the founding of the country and the current makeup of our nation. The flag has thirteen stripes to symbolize the original thirteen colonies, each unique in their beliefs and 2
operations, but working collectively to start a new nation for the people inhabiting the land. The fifty stars represent the fifty individual states that exist today and show how our nation has continued to grow since its beginning. I think this iconic symbol says to everyone that sees it there is a connection between the founders of our country and the citizens who live here today, we all want to pursue a life based on freedom and having the opportunity to find happiness. A representative object from the Cherokee subculture I identify with is the Cherokee Syllabary. The syllabary was created by a Cherokee man named Sequoyah between 1809 and 1821. The syllabary created by Sequoyah made the Cherokee one of the first tribes to have a written system for their language. This advancement allowed for the mass literacy of Cherokee citizens and allowed the culture and history to be passed down not only by oral tradition as was the historical norm, but also in written record that could be preserved for generations to come. The syllabary also allows descendants like myself who do not have personal connections to Cherokee citizens who speak our native language the ability to learn our language and pass that knowledge on to our children so our culture can continue to exist long after we have left this world. 3
