In exploring the themes of blind conformity and the destructive pursuit of luck, my essay will
argue that while Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" depicts a society's adherence to tradition leading
to a shocking ritualistic sacrifice, D.H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner" portrays the
tragic consequences of an individual's relentless quest for luck to appease a materialistic mother.
