Bronfenbrenner’s macrosystem is the broader cultural and societal framework that
encompasses the microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem (Sigelman & Rider, 2017).
According to Guy-Evans (2023), “The macrosystem differs from the previous ecosystems as it
does not refer to the specific environment of one developing child but the already established
society and culture in which the child is developing”. Children learn how they should respond to
death through observation of how those in their society behave and respond to death. For
example, someone who grew up surrounded by gang violence is likely to have a much different
perspective on death than someone who grew up in a socioeconomically privileged area.
I chose to look at Norse religion and Buddhism. In Norse religion, they view death as a tragedy
and a loss of everything one had ever experienced (Mark, 2018). According to Mark (2018),
“Religious rituals were practiced privately in homes or at outdoor festivals and the Norse has no
written scripture. It is difficult, therefore, to reconstruct the Norse beliefs as they would have
been enacted before and during the Viking Age”. They believe that a person’s soul goes to one
of five possible realms after death (Mark, 2018). The life and death that a person lived would
determine which realm their body went to. Norse religion shares similarities with Buddhism in
that they also believe that the life one lives determines how their soul is reborn (

Dying in Buddhism
). While the Norse believe that a person’s soul would travel to a realm after
death, the Buddhists believe that the soul is reincarnated into one of six forms: gods, demi-
gods, human, animal, hungry ghost, or hell creature; unless they have attained Nirvana which
means they do not get reborn (Death and Dying in Buddhism).
I believe that Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model applies to the programmatic theme of
emotional intelligence. Bronfenbrenner’s model is all about how the child is impacted by their
environments. A supportive and nurturing environment can foster the development of healthy
awareness and regulation of emotions.
