ANALYSIS ESSAY #2 (50 points). Word count: between 700—1,000 You will analyze one reading, specifically, the author’s argument. Your focus is on development of logical reasoning and analytical and argumentative writing skills. *NOTE: I am not asking you to write an essay arguing for or against whatever the author is arguing. I am asking you to analyze their argument . Therefore, do your best to withhold judgment. Judge the argument’s effectiveness, not your beliefs on the topic itself. For example, if you are writing about Edward Conard’s “We Don’t Need More Humanities Majors,” you will not be arguing whether or not you believe we actually need more humanities majors. Rather, you will be analyzing how well Conard argues his points and how effective these points are (or aren’t) via ethos, logos, and pathos. ****On research: You must use at least two outside resources to complement your assertions. At least one source must be from a scholarly journal (the other source(s) can be taken from websites, books, etc.) Any information taken from outside resources must be cited appropriately, using MLA style. Include a Works Cited page. Reading options: “Is Forgiving Student Loan Debt a A Good Idea?” by Kayla Webley “Debate on Student Loan Debt Doesn’t Go Far Enough” by Robert Applebaum “Millennials Are Selfish and Entitled, and Helicopter Parents Are to Blame” by Nick Gillespie “We Don’t Need More Humanities Majors” by Edward Conard “We Need More Humanities Majors” by Christian Madsbjerg and Mikkel B. Rasmussen “I want a Wife” by Judy Brady **Be sure to identify what author and piece you are analyzing. Ideas on directions to take your essay: Analyze the author’s logos, ethos, and pathos appeals (and their effectiveness). Specify specific sections that are (or are not) effective. Bring up these appeals by name to show an understanding of these concepts. This part is required. The below directions/suggestions are optional. Find and identify rhetorical fallacies and their effect(s) on the reader. Identify any assumptions and their effects on the reader (see pages 82-83 in Rules for Writers) . Explore how the author could make his or her argument stronger and what might be making it weak. Evaluate the writer’s tone/persona (page 92 in Rules for Writers ). Identify instances of effective (or ineffective) use of evidence (stats, testimony from authorities, invented instances, etc.) POLICIES: 1) Failing to double-space your essay will result in a loss of five points. 2) Your essay will be docked 10% of the available points for each day it is late , up to five days (for a 50% total point deduction). Any paper turned in more than five days late will no longer be accepted and you will receive a zero for that assignment. 3) ** Your grade will be drastically reduced if you don’t get close to meeting the word count. If you only reach about 350 words, for example, you can expect to lose half your paper’s points. You cannot achieve a good grade without meeting (or being very close to) the word count. 4) ***All essays must conform to standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation rules. Use Times New Roman 12 point font. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:
1) You can submit a final draft essay up to five days early for extra credit (and after the rough draft workshop takes place). For each day it is early, you will receive one extra credit point. Revision Checklist About the Intro Do I use one of the six “hooks” to immediately grab the reader? Do I state the thesis of my paper in the introductory paragraph? If referring to outside readings/sources, do I clearly mention the author and/or the work that is being referenced? Do I bring up and/or define any important background information that the reader must know? About Support Have I included enough vivid, exact details? Are there any portions of the essay that do not support the thesis and should therefore be eliminated or rewritten? About Coherence Have I included time signals and/or transitions such as first, then, next, after, while, for example, furthermore, in addition, however, and next to help connect details as the reader moves from the beginning to the middle to the end? Do the sentences within individual paragraphs all support the point of the topic sentence? Do I have an introductory paragraph, multiple supporting paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph? About Sentence Skills Have I used a consistent point of view throughout my essay? Have I used specific rather than general words? Have I avoided wordiness and used concise wording? Have I avoided clichés? Are my sentences varied? Have I checked for spelling and other sentence skills?
