Concert report #1 Mozart: Requiem The 5th of november 2021 I listened to a full concert via online of the Orchestre National de France, directed by James Gaffigan with the soprano Marita Solberg, mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes, tenor Joseph Kaiser and bass Alexander Vinogradov, on June 29, 2017, and performed in the basilique de Saint-Denis as part of Saint-Denis Festival. The piece name is Requiem, and was composed by the famous Wolfgang Mozart, Franz Süssmayr and Joseph Eybler in 1791. The Requiem is scored for 2 basset horns in F, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets in D, 3 trombones (alto, tenor, and bass), timpani (2 drums), violins, viola, and basso continuo (cello, double bass, and organ). Key: B major-D minor About Mozart: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a musician capable of playing multiple instruments who started playing in public at the age of 6. Over the years, Mozart aligned himself with a variety of European venues and patrons, composing hundreds of works that included sonatas, symphonies, masses, chamber music, concertos and operas, marked by vivid emotion and sophisticated textures. During his short life, he composed in all different musical forms, including operas, symphonies, concertos, masses, and chamber music. Today, he is still considered a genius. Mozart was not in the best state of mind and health when he was asked to compose Requiem. He was overwhelmed about his debts, he was seriously ill and his music didn’t catch the people’s attention anymore, his concerts didn’t have the same popularity. Also, at the time he was deeply engaged with the writing of two operas: The Magic Flute and La clemenza di Tito. All three together, were too much for an ill man. Mozart sustained several hours of hard work, it was an obsession. But it was too much, he was only able to complete the Requiem and Kyrie movements. He died at the age of 35 on December 5 1791, before he could complete his work. Mozart’s pupil Süssmayer was the chosen one to finish the job, because Mozart had given him specific instructions about how to finish the job. This play is a masterpiece, and it overwhelms me to think how much better would have been if Mozart completed the composition himself. I have no doubt Mozart wanted to move our souls with this piece. The Requiem embodies the essence of soul music.
