Jaya Brake Southern New Hampshire University Module Two Assignment 10 January 2022 Watchman style situation: Watchman style situation, is used when trying to maintain order and discipline. The most common scenario this would be used in is a police officer allowing a minor charge to “slide” in order to obtain information on a case they’re working. Watchman style of policing is usually found, in communities that are working class, with partisan mayor–city council forms of government. Culture: In a watchman unit, the culture is intense. They deal with humanities worst, so their tone needs to match in equal. These units deal with intense crimes, drug lords and darker crimes. They often end up in scandals because they skate the law to accomplish the mission. This intensity is also driven from their non-conventionalist ways, due to the nature of the crimes they investigate, they must maintain a high level of intensity. Legalistic style situation: This style is used for police officers who monitor traffic speeds. They are strict about the law and enforce it to the max extent. They are the polar opposite of the watchmen style, who view the law through a looser lens. They view the law in black and white; and hold the citizens under their watch to it. They’re known for having a high number of citations and misdemeanors due to the way they enforce the law. This type of policing is often
brought in to clean up the watchmen units scandals due to their strict adherence of good order and discipline. Culture: Much like the watchmen unit, this department or unit probably has a more intense culture, but for a plethora of different reasons. As it is with most “blue” units or individuals, they bring a natural level of intensity. As mentioned above, they strictly enforce the letter of the law, which brings a certain level of rigidity to the unit. The watchmen unit is intense because of the nature of the crimes they deal with, the legalistic style is intense due to their rigid adherence to the law. Service-Style situation: In the servant-style, they’re focused on helping people. A situation to best describe them would be something along the lines of helping fire/EMS, assisting the elderly, and giving someone who is intoxicated a ride home, rather than arresting them. Their focus is serving the needs of the community as opposed to fighting crime like the other two styles. They often try to prevent crime, as opposed to fighting it. The servant style uses their selflessness to serve their community, even to the extent of sometimes setting the law to the wayside in order to serve the public. Culture: Their culture is much more passive than the other two styles. They employ a much more lackadaisical work environment, are more lenient with the public, and focus on what’s best for the individual, rather than “throwing the book” at them. This type of servitude is probably much more fun to work in due to the laxed environment and is extremely popular in smaller towns or rural areas. The laxed environment drives the culture of their community to be
more willing to comply, less crime, and ultimately a closer, more stable relationship with the community they’re sworn to serve. Sources: Dempsey, J. S., Frost, L. S., & Carter, S. B. (2019).
