Exploration Document Draft Cultural Artifacts The Adoration of the Magi was painted by Sandro Botticelli painted in 1475 during the Italian Renaissance period. The location of this painting is in Uffizi Gallery, located in Florence, Italy. The Lamentation by Giotto di Bondone, was painted Italy in 1305, also during the Italian Renaissance period. The current resting place of this painting is in a Scrovegni Chapel, located in Padua, Italy Common Theme The theme of my first work (The Adoration of the Magi) is being expressed in a joyous manner. This masterpiece is showcasing the celebration of new life being brought into the world. There are people lined up waiting to encounter their newborn savior. While they are lined up you can visualize them admiring the newborn child, wile some bystanders are shown gasping at the sight of Christ in the flesh. In my second piece (The Lamentation), the theme is exemplified in showing the gloom of death. It advertises the death of Christ in a dark, descriptive manner as shown by the individuals huddled around him. The look on their faces expresses a strong desire for their savior to be brought back to life, even the angels in the sky show remorse. Personal Experience The theme of life and death is personal to me because it's something we've all experienced throughout our life. I remember the joyous feeling I experienced when I first saw my newborn nephew and niece, as the preciousness of new life is illustrated in The Adoration of Magi. Although the somber effects of death rarely affect me, I have related to the gloominess of death 2
as shown in The Lamentation when my husbands uncle died, I felt great sorrow when he passed because he was one of the first members of his family that I became close with. Profession Life and death is an intimate subject. Understanding the preciousness of it can impact several professions. Those involved in the medical field and criminal justice can experience both ends of the spectrum. An OB/GYN can experience the joy parents express when their newborn has finally arrived, but a detective may understand the somberness of death at a crime scene. Humanities Resources My first source details "The Lamentation" in a new light. This source explains the newfound "published" date and its reasoning. It then goes on to detail the painting, adding context in ways that I had not thought of, it's an excellent source on one of the most mysterious paintings of the Renaissance Period. My second source discusses three points of view on the painting "The Adoration of the Magi". It shows the controversy behind the painting, which provides an astounding viewpoint on one of da Vinci's greatest works. Being that I had two pieces from the Renaissance Period, I felt that it was important to have a source that sort of overviewed the period as a whole, which is why I selected my third source, "Renaissance". Historical Context The historical significance of "The Lamentation" is mostly just the controversy surrounding the publication date. Carly Collier states in her work "William Dyce's 'Lamentation over the dead Christ' — a new discovery" that "To date, the earliest known mention of Aberdeens "Lamentation over the Dead Christ" (hereafter simply referred to as "The Lamentation") occurs in 1935. The controversy lies in the fact that there was a letter that stated the painting was 3

commissioned in 1847 for a small village. The second piece, known as "The Adoration of Magi", is historically significant because it is the template for our modern day nativity scenes. It is also significant because it was originally commissioned to Leonardo da Vinci prior to his "Departure to Milan" (Apolloino, et al, 2021) and was handed off to Lippi to finish the painting. Similarities and Differences David Young Kim defines renaissance as "A term generally used to designate a historical period of cultural revival", which accurately describes the Renaissance Period. It was a period of revival of art which had a lasting impact on our culture today. "The Adoration of Maggi" laid the foundation of our modern day nativity scene, but it's much deeper than that. I believe that it signifies the excitement of new life. The "yang" to lifes "yin" is death. Death is illustrated in "The Lamentation" as gloomy, moody, and dark. It expresses the somberness of the death of Christ. While both pieces may show be polar opposites, their theme is ever intertwined as one cannot occur without the other. While one maybe expressing joy over new life, others may be feeling sorrow over the loss of life. Medium The meaning for both of my artifacts are pretty clear. "The Lamentation" depicts Christ being held and surrounded by his loved ones. The sorrow is evident as they stare at his cold, lifeless body, prior to his resurrection. The meaning of "The Adoration of Magi" is shown as the "Response to the call of Christ" (Apollonio, et al, 2021). Quite the opposite of The Lamentation, The Adoration of Maggi shows the joy of the newborns life, which illustrates the theme. Thesis Statement 4
Life and death are fragile subjects, as The Adoration of Maggi signifies the joy of new life, The Lamentation depicts the sorrow of loss. Audience The ideal audience would be anyone who is interested in examining art. Specifically, individuals who enjoy finding a connection between two seemingly unrelated pieces. Message Tailoring my presentation to fit the needs of my audience is mandatory if I am to write a piece that suits them. I plan to use jargon that is common amongst those who enjoy art. I also plan to use common words and phrases for those who aren't "super into" art, but would also enjoy reading a piece that will examine the connection between two seemingly unrelated pieces of art. 5
