The purpose of this assignment allowed me to see how the middle school field experience is to have a feel as to what middle school is like since my main teaching profession leans more toward elementary. I was able to see many ELAR teachers, but Mrs. Lindberg at United Middle School and her 7th-grade ELAR class stood out the most. Although she teaches middle school her classroom learning styles have given me tips on how I can use this for the future. I asked Mrs. Lindberg if she follows a schedule, and she said yes, she feels that having a schedule for everything and being on time is the main key for an organized and responsible class. From observing myself there is a board dedicated to the schedule as to what times they change for the next class and the scheduled times as what they will be covering or resuming. Mrs. Lindberg used many academic engagements time such as doing a clear learning objective, so she would start the class by clearly stating the objective of the lesson or the objective of what they're going to do that day. She also used an engaging introduction to the class; she was very big on teaching their students multitasking and responsibility, so her engaging introduction showed a real-life issue to show the students how to be responsible and multitask. The teacher also uses independent practice just as mentioned how she wants her students to be responsible and multitask she gives them two things to work on what they were doing Grammarly and on the other side was essay they had to do alone. Although they do have independent practice the teacher also does a formative assessment where she checks on her students’ progress and guides them if they seem to need any help, or she wants to help them to receive a good grade. An interdisciplinary and integrated approach she used was the objective of the day where the students had to read a diagnostic, “Rikki Tikki Tavi.” While using SCR which is structured conversations about reading that integrates elements of reading comprehension and critical
thinking skills. For cooperative learning, students respond by answering questions right away when the teacher asks the class or a certain student which indicates active participation and collaboration. In critical thinking and problem solving the teacher has what is called a closing task so students respond to a question(s) as to what they understand from the lesson, and they stick it on a wall so when the teacher gets back to it and notices many got it wrong, she will reteach the lesson. Lastly, the differentiated instruction, the teacher uses Grammarly for guidance so when the student has independent time, this will help the student improve their essay writing by having a tool to support their understanding. A teacher can be most effective by having there is subject knowledge and having a solid understanding of the subject matter, so they know what they are teaching to their students. They must also have clear communication and be able to explain their content clearly is crucial for the students. To be most effective they should also have passion, enthusiasm, and organization skills, being passionate and having enthusiasm towards your students creates a positive impact on your students to learn more and engage more. As well as organization having well-organized lessons, materials, and classroom routines can help students contribute to a productive and organized classroom. All in all, I absolutely loved the way Mrs. Lindberg teaches, she is very big on teaching responsibility to her students so they can use it for the future. One of her skills that stood out to me the most was when she was teaching responsibility to her kids that they have to have Chromebooks charged completely and if not, she will contact the parents and will make the child sit in the back alone charging their Chromebook. I feel like using that method will help kids understand and be prepared in class. I hope in the future I can visit her class again and take more notes!
