This assignment that I was able to experience allowed me to see how teachers interact and help out the students they have. As someone who is currently taking education classes and wants to be able to pursue teaching in the future, it is able to help me see the point of view of what it would be like when I become an educator. I got to see Mrs. Martinez, a kindergarten teacher who has been working for a total of seventeen years at Clark Elementary. Both visible and invisible curriculum that I was able to observe were the classroom layout, and the arrangement of the tables that contain a number of four students at each table has its way of affecting the learning environment. Two informal curriculum I noticed was the bright and positive posters and the video learning. The posters are informal because it is something that a formal curriculum would say, it is more recommended that it be strictly used. However, these posters help educate and help create a positive and motivating learning environment. As well as the video learning curriculum also helps students explain the lesson more, it provides additional resources for the students to understand the concept more aside from what they’ve learned in the formal curriculum. Two of the learning styles Mrs. Martinez used were responsive and respectful behavior and guidance and assistance. Responsive and respectful behavior of the students included raising their hands, and being respectful which helps create a classroom of a positive and respectful environment. An example can include when a student randomly got up and started to walk around during the lesson, the teacher would calmly ask the student to sit back down and she will get to the student and help with their question once she has finished teaching, and yet the student obeyed and sat and waited till further notice. Guiding and assisting is the main learning style for students, the teacher would walk around the whole classroom peeking through the students’ work to see if they got the work correct. If it came to terms that they did not do it correctly or noticed,
they were struggling she would take the time to guide them and then give a friendly reminder or refresher on how to do a certain thing when the majority of the class seemed to struggle with that one topic. The culture that was reflected in the curriculum is the Spanish/language instruction where the teacher shows the students how to capitalize and lowercase the letter “P” and work on the Spanish textbook by learning how to draw what word was said in Spanish, so it helps students grow as a bilingual. Another one would be the teacher's promotion of a growth mindset; she uses an encouraging sentence for the students. For example, one student kept repeating that they did not know how to do the assignment, and the teacher responded, “We don’t say we don’t know, we say we are learning.” Using we are learning instead of saying I don’t know reflects a positive and growing mindset. Overall, I loved her teaching skills, which for sure had my mind set on educating in elementary. Having the students watch a cartoon video based on the lesson the teacher was explaining is one of the many things she used that I could use for the classroom, I believe it helps the students have a better understanding of the topic. During my observation, a student did have a little accident, so I was able to see how everything was handled and what to do, the teacher sent the student to the nurses’ office, helped the student grab a change of clothes, and resumed class in a fashionably calm order. I absolutely loved the quote she used for her students, “We don’t say we don’t know; we say we are learning.” It not only helped the students it helped me and my future class to always have in mind that we are learning, but it’s also a process.
