Trade Book Reading Assignment
Purpose for reading the trade book.
I chose Lab Girl by Hope Jahren for my trade book because the book touches on lab safety, and different types of sciences, and it is a coming-of-age book where the narrator is inspired to pursue science. This book moved me to pursue science because the narrator really looked up to her father, as do I, and admired that he had his own passion for his work. I believe this showed that science can be for anyone, young or old. I believe that this book would inspire the students that I would teach in my biology secondary classroom. Many students are not too sure what they would want to do in life, but this author does an amazing thing where she connects living things to the elements of life such as the “truth” like trees. Hope Jahren helped describe when choosing anything you are passionate about it takes work to get there.
Trade book application and relevance in the classroom.
Describing this story, I would place myself in Hope’s shoes and connect to her
character. Hope’s mother did not go to college and fulfill her dreams to raise her children, just like my mother. Knowing that as a woman, she was determined to carry out her goals before she
was bonded with someone else. Applying this story to my own life just motivates me to become
my own person and find what drives me. I would want to incorporate this story at the beginning of the year to help my students enjoy what the narrator enjoyed about science but also see how she was drawn to it on her own.
Evaluation of trade book based on the Elements of Engagement
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren is not your ordinary scientific researcher biography the author
keeps the reader engaged by inserting relatable content that we all go through. Hope states growing up her family always seemed “cold” or “distant.” She would often mention that she had
to develop her own safe space within the lab. As her life goes on, she describes a time when her safe space would have to turn into her temporary home to fund her projects. She felt like she finally got what she worked for, but the pressure and requirements it had on her got to too much. I believe we all find ourselves in some situations that we typically did not see ourselves in, but end up there off of our own doing. She eventually worked herself out of the situation, which is why this book is inspiring to young readers. This book is relatable to readers because

the Lab Girl describes her hard-working mother that did not have the chance to learn a formal education, a father that worked hard day and night as a scientist, and a husband that sacrificed some of his own conveniences for the advancement of his wife Hope. The narrative structure of this story was built on the chronological time of her life from childhood to adulthood. Places we
can often include are her “creaky” standard family home in Minnesota, the spotless college lab with equipment as new as the day, and the University hospital where she worked at night and patients contributed to her chronic insomnia. My trade book character went through many times in her life where she had to make choices and take risks to become the person she intended. She had to take a risk on whether of having adequate shelter or her own lab. She decided to go off to
school unlike the other woman in her family. Hope went through getting diagnosed with bipolar
disorder and had to learn how to navigate after having a baby. She also leaves the lab she earned to work at a hospital in Hawaii. Hope constantly says how much she valued her family as much as she did the science she acquired. People could agree with the inspiration this book holds, some could say the Hope character could have married Bill instead of Clint, but that is my opinion.
Text Connections
I believe that this trade book allows students to make many different connections-
connections to themselves (text-to-self), connections to another text (text-to-text), and to the world (text-to-world). Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, connected to me because I was not too sure what teacher I wanted to be, and the character just started being Intune with herself and started following the passion that was always in her. Reading this story, made me feel like no matter what happens in your life you must keep going because it is not about the small win it is about the central goal. With this text, the reader can make many connections to other texts that display
women going through challenges to get to where they need to be. Texts such as Tempting the Beasts, where a scientist has to sleep in her lab at night to achieve her goal and Lab rat, a girl determined to be one of the greatest scientists resonated with Lab Girl because they showed the true grit of a woman can have to accomplish her goal. This text applies to the real world by displaying that this could be anyone. She was a regular girl from Minnesota that was inspired by
her father to pursue Science. She took it further than her father and created her own safe space at work which could be relatable to anyone with a job.
