frequency of certain glyphs and where they appeared in texts, Knorozov was able to ascertain that some of the Maya glyphs could actually be interpreted as syllables, and he came up with a system for reading their entire language. The Maya system of writing used hieroglyphs. These symbols were a combination of pictographs directly representing objects and ideograms glyphs expressing more abstract concepts such as actions, ideas and syllabic sounds. The topics that the Maya inscriptions do not talk about are the concerns of the common people, nor are there any administrative texts, although things like accountancy might have been recorded in codices or other materials that did not survive the intervening centuries. The Maya created a writing system using symbols called glyphs. Each symbol represented a word or a sound. Glyphs were used to record events on stone slabs called stelae. The Maya also created books, known as codices.
